Installing fuel tank
Hi all
Do I need to wrap the fuel tank in foam? Thanks. |
Installing fuel tank
A common cause of engine stalling is foaming fuel. Some of this can be eliminated by wrapping the fuel tank in foam. It is not necessary to completely wrap the tank just provide some vibration insulation at places where the tank actually contacts any structure. I've noticed that some of the ARF's are not indicating that vibration proofing the fuel tank is a necessity. In any case it can't hurt to keep the engine vibration isolated from the fuel tank.

Installing fuel tank
I have several airplanes and a couple have foam wrapped tanks, some do not, and two have metal tanks screwed down solid. I can’t tell any difference. I’ve never had a problem traced to fuel foaming. I wrapped the ones with foam to fill up space and keep the tank in place. If the tank is firmly held in position I don’t think it really matters. If the tank is loose so it can sort of flop around, I think that is where the problem may arise. In that case, just wedge a little foam around it enough to hold it in place and I believe it’ll be OK.
