waterproof reciever?
 

I'm just starting out. I've had 5 serious crashes and 3 succesful flights. I live on a lake and fly floatplanes. My last plane was a Seamaster which I wrecked last week. I now have a Mariner 40 with an OS 46ax, which I will fly this weekend (weather permitting). My reciever got wet on every flight, especially the uncuccesful ones. But even the good flights, we ended up with some water inside the fuse spashing around. I have been able to dry the reciever out every time but I have a feeling I have been lucky. Is there a way to waterproof the reciever? Thanks for all your help. You guys are the greatest.

I don't think you can get a waterproof reciver. The only thing I can think of is to put the reciver in a thick plastic bag and seal the end the wires come out with tape, or you would have to make a waterproof compartment in the airframe to house all the radio gear, similar to the boat guys do. You need to make a saddle where the wing joins the fuse. Get some strips of [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXE102&P=0]This[/link] and make a gasket around the opening in the fuse.

If you wish to keep water off of your receiver use a baloon- Put your receiver inside a big party baloon (no air) and zip-tie the opening. Putting some silicone in the opening before you ziptie it will stop water from entering.


This is the method we used back in the day for our rc cars...

Try some Saran wrap, using a rubber band to secur the plastic where all the wires come out. Unless you're trying to make it a submarine...

Dude,

Even more important is there anyone you can work with? Sounds like you need to be on a buddy box, also this person would be able to give you some pointers on "water proofing" your plane!!!

Good suggestions here but you really need to find out why you're getting water in on the "successful" flights and fix it. The water will eventually ruin more than the receiver.

You can also use some clear RTV (silicone) to make a nice water proof wing saddle. Run a light bead around the entire wing saddle. Let cure for a few minutes to a half an hour. (a good skin will form on the silicone) Lay wax papper on all of the silicone you put down. Mount the wind and secure it as if you were getting it ready to fly. Being sure there is wax paper between the wing and the silicone. You should have put down enough silicone that as you tighten the wing down, a little silicone will be squeezed out. Let it sit overnight. The next morning, remove the wing, remove the wax paper and trim the side, excess silicone with a razor blade. Now when you mount the wind in the saddle, you will have a nice water tight, rubber seal.

take a look at the radio compartment in my airboat. 100% waterproof rx, battery, and servos.

servos are 'tool dipped' with O-rings around the arms, rx and battery are double ballooned.
