Evolution .46 NT Engine
Just got a new Evo .46 engine. Its going in a new U Can Do 3D 40. Was looking at the manual and basically, the manual
says "no break in needed". Hmmmm....I don't know 'bout that. It also says you don't really have to fuss around with the needle valves at all unless your trying to run in heavy humidity or at 20 degrees temp. I don't know about actually flying it the 1st fuel up. Was just going to run the engine and do the usual checks to make sure it isn't too rich or too lean. NE1 with experience on this engine? Opinions? Lastly, what glow plug would work well with it other than the standard one it comes with? Dave... |
RE: Evolution .46 NT Engine
I don't have a U can do 3d, but have seen plenty of them fly. You're gonna be looking to replace that evo engine fairly quickly. While it will fly fine, if you want to get into the very aggressive 3d manuvers this plane is capable of, you're gonna want something larger up front. Plus I have seen some threads that indicate the plane tends to be tail heavy, so instead of adding weight, you install a larger engine. Saito 72 or 82 seems to be a popular choice, I know they're considerablly more expensive than the evo. But they're also heavier, they swing a larger prop, etc etc, and you want a larger, lower pitched prop on this airplane.

RE: Evolution .46 NT Engine
I bought a new evo .46 (only missing manual and glow plug) and it ran perfect right out of the box. I did richen it a little just to be on the safe side, and then flew it on its first tank. The only problem was that my somethin' extra was a little too sensitive and I almost started to think it wasn't gonna come home in one piece, but I got the nose up and jammed full throttle, which pulled it vertical to until I leveled out about 200 feet higher. I am using a OS A3 with a master airscrew 10*6 (you have to drill out the center, but it works great) I love it, any new planes I get are gonna have evo's up front.

RE: Evolution .46 NT Engine
I put a new .46NT on a plane that previously flew with a TT Pro .46 and a .46 FX. The NT had a lot more power on the first tank of fuel using the same APC 11x6. Mine was not tuned perfectly, but that isn't a real problem. It was a little ragged going to full throttle, but smoothed out after a few flights. Easy to start and always has a lot of power.
My next plane will have another .46 NT. My Evo .45 trainer engine will go on something else later. That is a fantastic engine, also with a lot of power. |
RE: Evolution .46 NT Engine
Thanx for the posts! The U Can Do, I'm gonna try it out on the .46. I'm not into 3D yet, just your run of the mill loops and rolls etc.
I may wind up thowing in a bigger engine in it when I'm ready to. I did notice on the U Can Do that there is a heckuva CG range. From 2 to just about 4 inches from the leading edge. Probably for the 3D stuff, you'd wanna have the balance at the back end of the CG range. Dave... |
RE: Evolution .46 NT Engine
I like Fox glow plugs myself. I have used the standard longs with and without idle bars and find them to be great in all the engines I have tried them in. The K&B 1L is also a very good plug. Many people reccomend the OS #8 & #3 plugs. I have never used any yet. I have some to try eventually. Any of these plugs should work good for you.

RE: Evolution .46 NT Engine
Thanx Mark! I have some OS #5's but they are used in an OS .46 AX. I will have to try the OS #3...

RE: Evolution .46 NT Engine
Lucky the #5's escape me now. I don't remember where they fit in. But if they are working in your AX I can't see why they won't work in your Evo. I would try one just for Grins and Giggles. If they work you are set.

RE: Evolution .46 NT Engine
You are going to like your Evo. Unfortunately, I totaled my Twist 40 this weekend with my Evo .46 on it. With a 12.25 x 3.75 APC 3D prop it would hover and full throttle would pull out again but not super fast pull out. Even though it ran fine right off, it did still get better with run time. In fact the last day of flying, I finally got it to the point where it had a stable idle and would go from idle to WOT without any kind of hiccup or hesitation. On a side note, I had to adjust the low speed needle factory range on mine about 1/4 turn to get it to run to my satisfaction.
I'm not sure what a Ucando weighs, but I would expect good performance from the Evo. Duke |
RE: Evolution .46 NT Engine
Thanx Duke....did you just fly it on the first tank full? BTW, how'd you dork the Twist?

RE: Evolution .46 NT Engine
I ran it in with a few tanks on the test stand before I got the twist. I had about another 50 flights of about 8 to 10 minutes each, so maybe another 6 or 7 hours on it. You'll like the fuel efficiency also, I don't know how big the Tiwst tank was, but I do know it was 43 cranks to fill it and usually 10 minutes was about 23 cranks to refill with moderate throttle use. When not going for vertical thrust, I spent most of my time at about 1/2 throttle.
Since they are supposed to be preset and run, I would think if you ran a tanks through it on the ground, you would have no trouble. You might not even need one tank, but at least you can get a duration idea from the ground run. I initially had problems keeping the idle from loading up, but adjusting the factory set low needle limiter a small amount cleared it up. Some people just take the limiter off, but I left mine. I dorked the Twist flying inverted 3 or 4 ft off the ground in a high speed (for a Twist that is) pass. Had been flying the pattern inverted and just lost my train of thought and pulled full up when I shoulda pushed. You can see pics in the crash forum under 'What yellow matches a Twist'. The front of the fuse is totalled, but not as much damage as I might have thought. Good luck, Duke |
RE: Evolution .46 NT Engine
Sorry for your Twist Duke. I know how it feels. Although, I've dorked a few of my electric foamies doing inverteds 3 feet off the deck!
Wouldn't you be able to get some replacement parts from Hangar 9 and re-do it? The U Can Do has just the vert stab and rudder to be put on, canopy and some hacking with the cowl. Should be about done tomorrow. I do need some servo extension wire. I'd like to maiden it this weekend if I can. However, I also need some fuel. The U Can Do's tank is 8 oz. while my Arrow is 11 oz. RE: Evolution .46 NT Engine
I checked the fuse price at Horizon. By the time I bought and shipped the fuse, it would end up about $65. I can get a whole new one for $99, so if I decide to get another I'll just get a whole one and have a spare wing and tail set. I've been watching a guy fly a Modeltech Magic Extra at the field and may opt for that instead of another Twist.

Check out HobbyPeople. I think the magic is still on sale.

RE: Evolution .46 NT Engine
I have a new 61NT engine. I had to adjust the low speed needle to keep it running at low throttle. The first couple of flights had the engine running ok but nothing special. Then it really started to pick up power. I have it on a Kaos 60 and now the speed of the plane is getting scary fast with an APC 12-6 on it! I wish my tach wasn't acting up so I could see what its running at. :D
