YS63 or Saito72 on trainer
 

I have a YS110Fz on my Utra Stick. What an awsome engine. The previous posts are right, after you get it tweeked in you have few problems.

I don't believe in buying engines over, I mean first an inferior engine, and later a decent engine. I would much rather spend the cash the first time and buy power and quality. The issue is I would like to put either a YS63 or a Saito 72 on my Proteget 60 Trainer. I am going to use my GMS 76 as a paperwieght, a piece of junk. I figuer that after I am bored with the trainer for just fun flying I could put that engine in an other plane.

I am a YS man now. I get along with them fine. Why break habit, but will the 63 pull a trainer? I think it would pull it around no problem at 1/2 throttle.

What's your opinion? we'd like to know...

Personally, I like the Saitos. I have a 72 and have not had one problem with it in the almost 3 years I have had it.

I know the Saito 72 will pull your trainer with no problem.

Suggestion: If you have not purchased the engine yet and decide to go with the Saito, I would look very hard at the new Saito 82. 20% more power, but the same size and weight as a 72 and only about $25 more.

I will throw my hat in the Saito ring as well. I have a bunch and they all work fantastic. I think you will like it.

Well the price is actualy more for the .82 than is the .91, and share the same case dimentions as the .72, .80, and .82. So I think I'll go with the .91 and have a nice powerfull yet not as hyper engine for the Proteget.

While either engine will fly the trainer nicely, I think it is a waste of a fine piece of machinery. You may even get a chuckle or two at the field. It's sort of putting a Corvette engine in a station wagon or 1/4 scale servos in a 40 size airframe. The Saito is a great engine as well, but in a trainer you will be taking the risk of ruining a good engine. If you must go for a 4 stoke, I would buy a Magnum. They run great and are price freindly. Sorry for my opinion, just a thought.

4TEC... the answer is already there... the hardest part of owning a Y.S. is the tuning of it. If you have that down pat, there is no better engine than the Y.S.'s. The Saito's are no where near the power of the Y.S. Even the 63 will kick Saito 72 butt. I had the 63 on a 5lb bird and it hovered at half throttle. Pull it around??? I think you'll have the first 3D capable trainer!!!

Furthermore the Y.S. fit and finish is superior to that of Saitos. With all the hoopla surrounding Saitos, I was very surprised to see Magnum/ASP - quality of the Saitos. Granted they run better than their Chinese counterparts... but the look and feel is a notch below O.S., Y.S. and Enya's

It's been a while but I finaly got around to putting the YS63 on my Protege Trainer. The first thing I noticed was the difference in wieght between the GMS76 and the YS63. The GMS made the plane nose heavy. The YS63 is light now and the plane finished almost neutral, but favored the tail heavy side. She climbs well and cruises well with the 13X6, and has decent vertical, but the dihedral conquers the climb. Most of the time with the 13X6 I was at 1/3rd throttle. This plane will be for aerial photos, not 3D, but it's nice to have the power. It's kinda like owning a Ford Taurus SHO, you know you'll not use that power all the time.

After a tank of break in with a 12X6 prop, I mounted a 13X6 and took it up for two tanks. The last prop of the day was a 14X8. This was too much prop for the 63. So maybe a 14X4, or 13X8 would be better. I do not have a tacometer yet but I have a temp gun. With the 13X6 Iwas at 208deg., with the 14X8 I was at 196deg. I dont have it perfect yet but next week it will be just fine.

I will not be running 14X8's, I just wanted to see the effect. I'll be running 12X6's and 13X8's.

I run a 12 x 8 or a 12 x 6 three blade prop and it is just blast. 13 x 8 sounds a bit much to me. But then again... you never know!

Check the YS forum. 13x8 is too much prop. The 63 should turn around 11,000 on the ground. 13x6 would be better.
