Do I have everything I need?
Hi,
I'm new to the whole R/C Airplane thing, and am ordering my stuff from tower hobbies (my local hobby shop doesnt have anything good). I was wondering if everyone could look over my wishlist (soon to be shipping list :P) and tell me if I ammissing naything, or if you have any suggestions etc. Heres a link to the wishlist: [link]http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTW0203p?&S=000599315[/link]. If you could just give your comments, that would be great. Thanks, -Limb |
RE: Do I have everything I need?
Hi Limb, and welcome aboard.
Now, put the credit card back in your pocket, and slowly walk away.... or risk learning what the rest of us know : you can never have enough of this stuff! Good luck, Dave Olson |
RE: Do I have everything I need?
i think the transmitter may be overkill,i would go for a skysport 6yg if i was a beginner,an electric starter would be useful until you are used to setting up engines.

RE: Do I have everything I need?
maybe get a few extra props and glow plugs. Try different pitches and stuff. good luck in this addictive hobby.

Limb
Go with the most expensive radio you can afford, dont do what i did and start with a basic 4 channel then moved onto a 6 channel now im on a Futaba 9C, which i should have brought in the first place would have worked out much cheaper...... If u know this hobby is for u then try to get the best u can :) You just have to buy the radio once and it will last u a lifetime if u look after it well and it has all the features u will need :), im now flying heli's and planes which you could never do on a cheap radio :) |

RE: Do I have everything I need?
I would be inclind to add 11 x 6 props, as thats what i use on my OS46 for greater speed...... also buy a few as its fairly easy to break these :)...... also some 5 mins epoxy :) and maybe if you can afford it a power panel, a lead acid battery and flight box :)

RE: Do I have everything I need?
When he said "electric starter" he meant an electric glow engine starter like the Hobbico Torqmaster. Trust me... you WILL want this. Makes engine starting SO much easier. You hook it to a 12v battery and push a button and it flips the propellor for you when starting glow engines. Instead of learning the hard way and getting fingers sliced or cut off completely.

RE: Do I have everything I need?
all look good and agree with 7CAF thats a good one and I started with 6yg which was a big mistake because with the second plane I needed a camputer radio.
I believe the 46AX uses A8 not the A3. For 5 min epoxy, you realy don't need it in mu opinion whe you need use 30 min expoxy. Get couple of 11x6 or 11x5 props at least 6 of them they should have package you will need them when you start landings. Get the fuel from you LHS. a quart will not last long and buying from fuel tower is not good due to extra charge. If you are not a member and plan on spending more on Tower, get the tower membership for $15 with order you will be fit with you next order. A11 hobby nife is missing if you don;t have one, and get some extra blades. You might take a look at fuel line fittings for the fuel bottle great planes ones does the good job. If you can afford $30-40 more get the 12V 7.5A battery and electric starter, makes life easier and safer for the fingers. Averything else looks good. Don't forget the $20 off coupon on the home page Have fun, as suggested you can still leave your credit card in your pocket and walk away, if not welcome to addiction. |
RE: Do I have everything I need?
Oh you might need a little more fuel line between fuel bottle and pump, so look at the hobicco recoil fuel tubing and of course.

RE: Do I have everything I need?
Ok, I updated it with your recommendations, please look it over again.
Again, thanks for all your help! -Limb |
RE: Do I have everything I need?
Oh I meant these for fuel bottle fitting
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXRS88&P=0 http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJ811 You still have the A3, I think 46AX needs A8 Glow plug and you can hove the tower starter which is same as hobicco just different label, http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXJC35&P=0 You need the follwing for the glow plug. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXL387&P=M Also for fuel don't but it from tower they will charge someting like $20 extra for the fuel. |
RE: Do I have everything I need?
The 46AX needs a A3 glow plug, they include a A3 plug in the box with the engine.
-Limb |
RE: Do I have everything I need?
yes you are right checked and it needs A3, I assumed it was like 46FX my bad.
|
RE: Do I have everything I need?
_Off Topic_
I got A8 with my AX, that's what I've been running in everything lately. Bad? Opinions? Feel free to PM me.... this should probablly be a seperate thread. BTW, you might also want to get a real good fuel filter for your fuel rig. A sintered brass pickup would be a good idea too. Never can get enough filters between the fuel and your engine! Andy |
RE: Do I have everything I need?
Nice list, looks like you are trying to do it right. One thing I would suggest is a good prop balancer. A prop that is bad out of balance ( and many if not most are ) will make life miserable for your airframe and radio gear. There are a number of good ones so this one is just a suggestion. RE: Do I have everything I need?
it may be just me but i would suggest a APC prop instead of wood because wood props tend to compress more than the APC, in other words youll be tighting the prop nut a little bit more and the APC tend to take more damage
|
RE: Do I have everything I need?
Hmmm props.
My recommendation - go with master airscrew. They are tough, cheap, and blunt. APC's are sharp, damage easier, and although they are *way* more powerful, you don;t need them on a trainer. The MAS will do you just fine. For the record, you must plan on nosing over a few times before the end of the season (or plan on nosing over a few times each visit to the field....) MAS will normally survive this, bu neither APC nor wood props take a nose-over very well. Once you have soloed, there is a great thrill in propping an 11x5 APC on the .46 size engines, and having a blast. inverted loops, etc. Until then, fly pragmatically. gus |
RE: Do I have everything I need?
How about a CG balance and incident meter. Not as critical on a high wing trainer, but another item to consider is a plane stand. If you fly from a busy asphalt field, you migh want to pick up a kneeling pad. Not so much for comfort but to keep your knee clean from all the fuel buildup in the pits. You will want to pick up a sets of standard and metric allen wrenches and nut drivers and a good sized wrench for your prop nut. Get some locktite! It's just amazing how quick all those fasteners start to work loose. I've lost a new prop and spinner in flight, and a screw off the back cover of my OS, as well as found loose engine mount bolts. 5 minute epoxy can be handy too.

RE: Do I have everything I need?
I'll second the MAS props for strength! I've nosed my Arrow over a few times by trying to turn too fast when taxi'ing. Also, I came into where I was sitting too fast and whacked the picnic table. Prop never broke. So, to get used to the plane, I'd use MAS....and then try a
APC 11x6 on your .46 Dave... |
RE: Do I have everything I need?
Well As you can see the list wil gon and on.
I really don't think the incidence meter will be that of a use on this plane. You can get a way without the CG machine, altough good and usefull you just need your two fingers to balance. And with a hogh wing trainere it is no problem. You can get a way with the finger prop balancer and which is neat because you can carry it in your field box, the other one you had is nice but will be good to have if you stick with the hobby. I think you need a expanded scale voltmeter /battery tester, Which is more important than the items listed above. You can't measure it with your fingers:) It will tell you whether it is safe to make that last final flight. If you fly 3 flights everytime you go to field, you don't need it now but if you want 4-6 flights you should get. Well the opinons will vary from now but you pretty much have a good list. I agree all props will do the job and my favorite is APC but MA is a good choice and will be better suited for training. A $10 toolbox from Wal-mart will serve as a good toolbox. |
RE: Do I have everything I need?
Oh btw you don;t need prop reemeer and dubro fuel line plugs
|
RE: Do I have everything I need?
APC 12.25x3.75 is now my favorite prop on my .46's.
You've got the right fuel pump on there. I've got the Dave Brown "six-shooter" and it's terrible. -Jeff |
