You can't go wrong with Futaba. I have three 7UAFS and they are great!

It all depends on how much you want to spend. I've owned Airtronics, JR, Futaba, and Hitec stuff. It's all good equipment, but the JR has been the best. If you're going to spring for an 8/9 channel, I'd get an 8103. If you want a 6 channel, the Airtronics RD6000 is the best available by far.

Hey I have used all of them and now run just JRs but they are all good. Best thing to do is check you LHS that you are going to and see what they are selling. Here in Las Vegas my local hobby shop which is Nice Twice hobbys or good old Hobby Town, handles JRs mostly so this is what I use because what I need In flight paks or just ext. wires they carry so I am not held up when putting together a bird. That my 2 cents worth. But the 8103 is very good and 652 and a couple of 783s, Oh and 1 400 JR

Budget?

I have a Futaba 6xas, great 1st comp. radio (Heli?)

Also, I have an Airtronics VG 600 (6CH.) not a computer radio > but a great value, and easy to operate as well...(Not Heli.)

If you have a little more $$ the 8103 (Aero/Heli.) is my favorite of the above mentioned...

Radio Choice

The most popular item may not be the best choice. Price will determine the popularity of any consumer item. There are vast varieties of good equipment on the market. I have flown everything except Airtronics. Not that it is bad it just isn't popular locally.

Find what the local flyers are using particularly if getting a computer radio. Programming will be a lot easier if you find someone who has already done the necessary set up.

Just like everybody said above, just about all of them are going to be good. All of my radios are Airtronics. Why did I pick that brand?? Because when I got into the hobby that is what the majority at our field were flying. And that brings up a huge point for choosing a brand. Go with what everybody else at your field is using. Why?? Because there will be no shortage of buddy boxes to help you train.

Computer Radio.

There all good just make sure its a computer radio. You can use it with limited features if you want. Most have a "quick start" guide. If you dont you'll make the same mistake as many have made.

You'll have a brand new 7 channel non-computer radio wrapped up in plastic because you dont want to sell it to someone you know because its the same channel as you're new one and Murphy's law says every time you go to field they'll be there with that radio they bought from you on the same channel ...wew

Just go ahead and get a computer radio :)

Another vote for JR 8103.

Having said that, I must add that I don't own an 8103 but, I have a JR PCM10 and have setup many students 8103s. I think it's the next best radio after the PCM10.
FUrther, get the Heli version. You'll get a better flight pack and the heli switch layout is much more comfortable for heli flying while still being comfortable enough for fixed wing.

Buy the brand that your instructor has.
You will never go wrong with that decision.
I am making an assumption that he/she has purchased a new transmitter in the last 3 years!
