trouble with control throws
 

I just bought a spacewalker 2 by Seagull Models. Its my first low wing plane. I'm coming from a kadet lt 40. Anyways at the end of the instruction book it has the control throws : Ailerons--3/16"up 3/16"down Elevator-- 3/8"up 3/8"down Rudder--1"right 1"left(this is for initial flying and sport flying.. the control throws for aerobatic flying are Ailerons--3/8"up 3/8"down Elevator--1'up 1"down Rudder 2"left 2"right.
Right now they are set for aerobatic flying and I want them set for initial flying but don't know how to do that. Can anyone walk me through this. By the way I have a Futaba 6xas transmitter.

Your best bet is to set up dual rates on your transmitter. You can keep the aerobatic throw settings on the high rate switches and then set the low rate to the mild settings. If you have the transmitter manual it will show you how. Look under dual rate settings in the table of contents. Note that the Futaba 6XA radios don't have a separate setting for dual rate on the rudder. It'll only work for aileron and elevator. If you do want to include a dual rate setting on the rudder, you have to program all three surfaces to the same percentage using just one switch to control all three. I usually don't worry about having a dual rate setting on the rudder, and set dual rates only on ailerons and elevator on their own separate switches. Another option is to mechanically set the throws by adjusting the pushrod locations at the servos and the control horns. Moving the pushrods to the inner-most holes on the servo arms will lessen the throw to that surface. Likewise, moving the pushrod to the outer-most hole at the control horn will also lessen the throw. Did you set up the push rods or someone else? I would look for some help from a experienced modeller in your area. If you don't belong to a club, the San Antonio Propbusters are a good choice. They operate two fields there. One over at the Covel Gardens landfill on the southwest side, and one over on Bandera Rd. and Loop 1604, behind the H.E.B. I've flown at both, and always find nice people there ready to help. It would take a lot of space to try and explain the adjustments here and you can't beat having someone show you in person. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Jesse gave you good advice. Use the transmitter's programming to set up dual rates. That's omne of the reasons to buy a decent computer radio, although many non pc radios have dual rates as well.

You could also set up "exponential" to soften the throws when the sticks are close to neutral.

(top two) push both the progaming botton... then ( right botton) cycle to the dual rates.
flick the dual rate switch (i have mine set down for low , up for high)
elevator= left switch
airleron = right switch

(bottom two.....+ and -)
exmaple...if on low rate. take out the percentage until the control throw
decreases to your desire. add percentage for more throw when on high.
with the stick jammed to one direction...by flicking the dual rate switches
you should be able to see the control surfaces adjust acordingly.

there's no dual rate for the rudder on the 6xs.
i usually set the throw for max... manually.
i decrease the throw via the ATV option.
or have it set at low setting per plane's instructions and increase the throw
as i get more comfortable with the plane.

the ATV is a nice option for setting up the throttle

this is also cool...you can also adjust the ATV for either side of the throw.
lets say your planes was rolling more in one direction.
you can take the ATV out only on that one side.

the dual rates are only percentage of the ATV

Yeah there is. You just have to combine the elevator dual rate and the aileron dual rate into one switch. Set the Tx to mode 2 under DRSW. That function is in the PARA menu. That will give you dual rates for rudder but all the surface dual rates will be controlled with the aileron dual rate switch on the upper right. The rudder, elevator, and aileron percentages do not have to be the same value like someone mentioned earlier.

Definitely set up low rates for your first flights, 1" of elevator on a Spacewalker is a lot.

thanks for the advice. I fly mode 2 so i think the swithches will have to be reversed. Im still learning to program this tx.
