Prop Damage

All,

Granted, $2.50 is not a killer price, but I was wondering how to tell whether a prop was too badly damaged to rebalance and keep using.

I chipped one, knocking out a piece about 1/4" square from one corner. I replaced it with my spare prop, but was wondering if I should throw it away.

What is the general guidance on this.

Trash that dude!

I would throw it away for sure. That's enough to through it pretty far off balance. The prop itself could be weakend also. Don't take a chance for $2.50!

You "could" saw 1/4" off of each tip and keep it around for an emergency spare. But make sure there isn't any other damage (IE. cracks)

I always throw my damaged props away.....it's not worth risking your plane, engine, or the safety of yourself or others for $2.50.

I always keep a broken prop or two in my field box... i use them as chicken sticks :)

otherwise i toss them, snaping them in half to make sure they arent mistaken for good.

At the speed we run our engines, any propeller damage could cause a serious accident if it breaks away from the engine while the engine is running.

Broken props are great paint can stiring tools, or could be used to mix epoxy. If ya can't get yer $2.50 out of a propeller by letting it pull your airplane around, might as well put it to use in some other way :D

it's not worth the damage it could do to someone, I break them in half so the damaged prop will not accidentally get used, I belive I read in the ama magazine, where a couple of years back, fellow was using a damaged prop when it exploded and cut the jugular, bled to death trying to get to the hospital.
Have a goodun,John
