Good engine for 4* 60?
 

I'm looking at purchasing a 4* 60 kit this winter for my second plane, but I'm wondering what to put in it for a motor.

Right now I'm torn between an OS .65 LA or a OS .61 FX. I'm leaning towards the .61 (mainly due to it being in the FX line), but want your opinions.

Also, if you have suggestions for another engine, I'm all ears!

OS 61FX, better all around engine then the 65LA. The FX is a bearing engine and has great power, the 65LA is a bushing engine and while cheaper, does not make the power as the 61FX does.

Super tiger and thunder tiger engines are also good ones. I personally have never owned either one but a lot of our club members do and they are strong and cheaper that OS engines

I saw on Towerhobbies that there is a SuperTiger 91 for $119. That is a good deal, I am not real sure how good the engine is. Does anybody know?

I have a .61FX on mine, plenty of power, fly around at 1/2 throttle w/ a 13x6. Haven't tried to hover it YET ;). But seriously It'll do just about anything short of that w/ the FX, and I am not even fully broken in yet so I am not running at maximal power.

I tried the .46LA in my 4 star 40. I was very disappointed with the LA. I would imagine that I would be equally disappointed with the .65LA in a 4 star 60.

I have a TT91FS in mine swinging an APC 14x6 with 16oz dubro fuel take. Love the combination. Magnum is also a great engine. Go 4 stroke and go staight up. ;)

I have an Ervine .73 in my 4*60 this thing will rock. It will hover (I can't but it will) @ 3/4 throttle. It will knife edge. pulls off the ground with little gas and pulls out of trouble easy. Look into the Ervine you will not be sorry. I start mine with a flip of the spinner backwards.. it will start every time..

I got both the TT61 and the ST G90 ... TT61 is a great little thing, runs well and is trouble free. ST G90 is a great power house and not a screamer, takes a while to run in (mine was a well behaving engine after 2-2.5 gallons). If I were you I would go for the ST G90, its not expensive and will last a long time (so I have been told many times). With a nice 15x6 prop your 4* will just reach for the skies in a vertical! Oh yes ... my G90 starts easily and idles very well.

I have flown the 4-Star 60 with a OS 61 FX and it is a good combination as a sport flyer, I am not sure why anyone would want to fly 3D or hover with this type of airplane but I would guess the 90 Supertigre would do this and then some, the 90 ST provides great power but is messy, they like to throw a lot of oil and the high speed needle valve likes to come loose so if you buy on make sure to lock tight the two screws that hold the needle housing in, I fly a Lanier Stinger 60 with the 90 ST and it is a fun airplane. It really depends on the type of flying you are going to do with it. The 61 won't give it much vertical.

Flyrite - aaaaaah the 2 small screws that holds the housing ... I better keep a watch on mine, came loose once. My ST G90 is a very dry engine though.

I have flown both the 61fx and the 65 la. The 65 la is a very good engine. Being a bushing engine it sounds a litttle weak at idle but is a very powerful engine at full throttle. The 61fx is smoother and powerful to about 40 dollars smoother. I fly my 4 star 60 with a g90 supertigre. Great vertical. Needs adjusting frequently. The 65 la will fly a 4 star 60 just fine But a g90 supertigre will make it alot more fun.

I have a Sig 4 Star 60 that built about 3 years ago. I installed a 91 FX. I know everyone says that it is too big, but it sure is a lot of funnnnn.[8D]

Personally, I would install a TT .61 Pro -- it is about the same price as the LA (much cheaper than the FX), equals the OS engines in quality & matches the FX for power (a ton more than the LA). Pretty hard to beat. Another good choice is a LEO .61 Pro -- excellent quality, slightly less powerful than the TT or FX, but much more powerfull than the LA. It has a delivered price of $149.99 Cdn.

Have a TT 61 PRO on mine and it is great. Used a YS91AC originally and it was a rocket, but it wouldn't "stay" on idle. It was on the move unless blocked. :)

I went with a TT Pro .61 in mine. Great engine for the money! So is the .46! Really it all boils down to brand loyalty in my opinion.

The best bang for the buck is going to be a Super Tigre .90. They are way cheaper than the OS fx series engines. It will pull the 4* verticle forever and you won't be disapointed at all. Then if you want you can take it out of that plane and into another larger plane later on. You will kill 2 birds with 1 stone. They are good engines and have tons of power.

Hobbypeople.net has the Magnum 91 FS for 149 right now, can't beat that price and would go well in the 4*

yes, I second the magnum. $129 at tower. I bought 3 of them(for some projects I am working on). nice engines. I have one in my 4* and it flies it nice.;)

I have had 2 4*60'S and have flown them with several different engines. The first one had a Thunder Tiger Pro 61 on it and it flew OK it was good for sport flying but it didn't have much for vertical performance. I switched this engine out for a GMS 76. The GMS gave the plane unlimited vertical and was a very good running engine right out of the box. At 79.99 it was a great deal. I haven't been able to find anymore of these for sale lately. The second one had a magnum 91 4 stroke on it and it was a great flier. I flew this many times and loved it. I switched this out for a Thunder tiger 91 4 stroke and wow what a difference. This engine has more power than the magnum and it would pull the plane straight up out of sight. This was the best engine that I tried on the 4*. I think that the Super Tigre 90 would be a great engine on this plane also. I have had a couole of them but did not try them on the 4*. I am picking one up this week and at 119.00 from tower they are the best engine deal going.

On mine, I am flying an OS91 surpass. It provides great power for what the plane was designed to do. To be honest, I consider other types of planes to be more in the 3D/hovering mode. The 91 provides enough power for most aerobatics, and the plane is a very stable flyer.

Thanks for the advice -- I'm leaning towards the TT .61 pro now (saves me ~ $60 over the os) :)
