Engine question
Hello everyone!
I have an avistar trainer that I flew this past year with an OLD Enya .45 in it that my father- in -law gave me. Long story short, this fall the old enya gave up and is officially done. For x- mas, my wife has gotten me a 4*40 kit with an O.S. .40 LA (combo deal from Tower $118) and then she got me a Super Tigre .40 to replace the old Enya in my trainer. (Even though I know what she got me, she still won't let me have all this stuff till x- mas!) I've heard that the O.S LA engines are rather weak. My question is should I put the O.S in the Avistar and the Super Tiger in the 4*? Is there a substantial difference in the power that these 2 engines output? If so, I would rather have the more powerful engine in my 4*. Your thoughts are appreciated. |

Neither of those engines is a powerhouse but I would put the LA in the trainer. It will fly the 4*40 but will lack a lot of umph. The LA is a very reliable engine but a weak one. Lots of folks bash them, but for the price they are not bad for trainers and such.
For a second engine IMO its better to go with a 46 sized engine. Same size motor but has more power. I think the Thunder Tiger 46 is a fantastic engine. |

Gringo, thanks for the advice. I will go with the LA in the trainer. As far as getting a .46 for the 4*, that's not an option due to the fact that the engine is already bought and I am really not a speed fanatic in the first place, I'm more of a lazy sunday flyer. I think the .40 Super Tiger will suit my needs fine for the 4*.

I would second swapping those engines. I had a 40 LA and gave up on it. Way to little power even in my trainer. I have never regretted getting my Thunder Tiger 46's they are cheaper than OS but good quality. You still may want to get a 46 for the 4*40. Bill |

An Avistar will actually fly very nicely with a 40 LA -- although that is a testament to the Avistar, rather than the LA.

The ST .40 and OS .40 LA , although run well are not noted for power. Its a coin toss as to which one you want to put in your plane.

I fly off of a paved strip, so the LA is going into the avistar. Power, or lack thereof, should not be a problem. Like I said, I don't need gobs of power. Also, the wife already bought the super tiger .40 engine that I plan on putting in the 4*. I think I'll be fine with that too considering that Sig reccomends a .40 sized engine. Would I like a larger engine for the 4*? Maybe, but I think I'll go ahead and use what I have on hand. (unless of course one of you all wants to "donate" a tt .46!) Besides, in the review on the super tiger .40 on this site, the author flew a 4* with this engine and seemed to think it was adequate to fly the plane quite nicely.

Don't forget that a fresh LA may still be a noticable improvement over the tired Enya. Comparison is all relative to what you're used to.

I think you'll be fine with the .40 in the 4*. The 4* is a relatively light airframe and you're flying off a paved runway. It won't have massive amounts of vertical, but it'll fly fine. Dennis- |

I have an .40 LA in my badbly beatin Avistar, it pulls it well, I have it extremely leaned out... Evolution .40 is a good engine that would be much better I think.

You might want to keep that Enya, If the bearings are OK it probably only needs a ring, maybe a sleve. Broken in properly and cared for, the Enya will last a very, very, very long time.

samsdad.. I know you said you do not need globs of power.. And the S.T. 40
will fly the 4* I would guess a little better than the LA.. But have you thought about..Maybe sending the ST or LA back for the 46?? The price would not be that much different and I'm sure the place you got it from "I think" would not mind the change... If not enjoy and have fun!! |

Thanks for all the advice everyone. That's why I love this forum. I can get a range of different opinions on just about anything.
I think I'll follow Dennis' advice and stick with the .40 in the 4* for now. If I think I want more speed/ power, I may consider a .46 in the future. That way, I'll have an extra engine laying around that I "just have to get" a new kit for. Again, thanks for your input everyone! |
