Hi All and wishing everyone Happy Holidays!!
Now for the wind subject.... On this windy Saturday morning in Ft. Mohave and not being able to fly:-( To brighten my day somewhat I was wondering if this true:-) If so I guess I need to try to adjust my aptitude toward wind. Have a Great one All |
RE: Windy States/Countries:-)
Hi
I've spent some time in Wyoming and that is the truth. Have a great day! |
RE: Windy States/Countries:-)
Well, I've never been to wyoming. But was born and raised in Iowa. I can vouch that it is terribly windy there. ALL THE TIME. I just moved to MO. and it is way better here. Could fly here almost every day compared to the wind up in Iowa. Yuck........

Well Ron you certainly could have used one those Wyoming windsocks a few weeks back on the first day of your clubs (Colorado River Aircraft Pilots Society) Fly-in on Friday. Heck I unloaded my wheelchair and made the mistake of releasing the brakes, Darn near blown to end of the runway before I got that old chair under control:D

wyoming is only #7 as far as windy states, if you want REAL wind, come join us up here in north dakota. #1 in potential wind energy. hmm, we have lots of hills and trees to slow the wind down, wonder why it is windy... (sarcasim!!!, if you have ever been here, especially in the eastern part of the state, there is absolutely NOTHING resembling a hill for hundreds of miles, and very few trees.) last weekend we were hitting 60+mph gusts, continous around 40mph, with a temp of around 10F. wonderful weather for flying!
here is a link for potential wind energy rankings..., theoritically, ND is windy enough to produce 1/3 of the power used by the entire nation. http://www.awea.org/faq/tutorial/wwt_potential.html |
RE: Windy States/Countries:-)
is it true that North Dakota's state tree is the telephone pole? :D
|
RE: Windy States/Countries:-)
Hey John.. Your right the wind did do a job, Buy luckily it was
better on the weekend:-) Well hope you had fun, You know that was our clubs first fun fly.. So it can only get better, more so if we pick a better time of year. I like your plane and your flying style and hope to see you again!! It was Great to meet you!! |
RE: Windy States/Countries:-)
Hey smokingcrater... So what'll you all use for a wind sock.. The Pole:-)
I fly in some wind, but I need a lot more practice in it.. |
RE: Windy States/Countries:-)
Well here in Adelaide a day with the wind below 10Mph is pretty rare. A typical summer's day is a 15 - 20 knot seabreeze from the soutch west.

Still laughing at the great picture! Thanks.

RE: Windy States/Countries:-)
Hovering was invented while trying to land on a "calm" day here. Backwards touchdowns are the norm. Wind right now at 11:25 am is 27 sustained, 38 peaks.
"Wyoming Wind Festival--Jan 1 to Dec 31 Yearly" :D Now where did the outhouse blow to? Rich |
RE: Windy States/Countries:-)
Big chain deserves a big wind dont you think.
I would have a hard flying in that kind of wind. I bit** if the winds get above 20mph LOL ;) |
RE: Windy States/Countries:-)
lived in ICELAND for 1 year& yes they fly RC there & speak english (higher literacy rate than U.S.) great looking women too. try 40-50 + MPH for 2-3 DAYS &nights then often dead calm . usually breeze is steady -5-10 mph. did I mention the lava rocks -imagine what they do to your monokote .they don't use a chain for a wind sock-a trash dumpster works just fine.

Hey ELTIGRE.. Yeah I've felt the wind and cold on one of the few days
I seen day light:-) Thats when I seen all the boulders.. Went to watch a hour and half movie, and when I got outside all the boulders where gone, all nicely covered with all this white stuff:) That was the same nite the water pipes froze in the hanger.. Needless to say I was happy to get home:-) |
RE: Windy States/Countries:-)
There should be a "ball" on the end of that chain...

"Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweeping down the plain" is not just a line in a song, it is real. Of course, I have lived in Colorado, Chicago, Minnesota, and Michigan, and find that no matter where you are, the wind is always the greatest just after you fill up the tank. I will concede to both Wyoming and North Dakota though... You guy's need to plant a bunch of trees on the western side of the state to slow it down!

RE: Windy States/Countries:-)
Wyoming experiences high winds generally called 'Chinook winds'. They flow easterly from high to low elevations. The winds are warmed by atmospheric compression hence the name chinook (indian for Snow Eater) In some cased these winds can top 100+mph and cause fierce floods as snow rapidly melts..
