How many planes do you take to the field?
I just got my newest plane built and ready for flying, a GP J3 Cub and was wanting to test fly it.. My buddy sent me an email saying, "lets fly". I took the usual 3 planes with me, but this time, I had to make room for the Cub. Just wondering how many planes do you all take with you to the flying field? Yesterday, I took four. Luckily I drive an Expedition.
1. Sig 4*60 2. Hanger 9 AT-6 3. Hanger 9 F4U Corsair 4. Great planes Cub |
RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
On Saturday I took 3. Was a bit challenging because the wife took the Explorer shopping, I had to drive the Sebring convertable. Actually had to take the wings off two of them, but they fit. That's why I love flying .25 size planes, much more compact.

Oh, check that, what I meant to say was the wife let me drive the Expedition to the field. (You never know she could be checkin' in on my RCU threads);)

RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
Usually two at most. But since it's getting cold, I bring one.

RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
I usually bring out 2. One large one and one smaller one. I have on occasion brought out 3 but its hard to fit everything in. I used to have some planes with smaller 55" wings but I prefer the larger wings with 600 to 900 sq. in. wing area. Much more simpressive outline to watch. :D

RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
I usually take 2 planes at any one time. I find that I usually have in mind which one I will fly the most and will do so. I take 2 just in case my primary plane has problems that can't be fixed at the field. Then I have a back up ready to fly. I have tried taking more than 2 on several occasions, but find that between set up, flying, cleaning and tear down, I fly more when I stick with just one. For me, it's not about the room since I have a pick up with a cap on the back, its more about how much flying I can really do with multiple planes.

RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
Usually I took 2.
One primary and one back. Room also dictates how many I take. I have a small pickup (Ranger Supercab) so some of my planes take up most of the bed if I do not break them down, particularly the Ultimate biplane (I hate removing 2 sets of wings but love the plane) |
RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
I always take at least two, & often three, or four. Variety is the spice of life, plus if you take only one, & it has a problem, you're dead in the water.

RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
I take just one.
The one I am planning on flying. |
RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
I take two most of the time ... but I have been known to load up four and head out also :D

RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
I knew I wanted to maiden the Cub so that one was for sure. The 4*60 is my warm up plane so it had to go. My buddy and I try to fly formation style with his H9 P51 and my H9 AT-6 so it had to make the trip. Then I just repaired the vertical stab to my H9 F4U so it had to go for testing purposes. Geezzzz, I may need to buy a trailer. I do admit that it took some time to unpack then repack everything after I was doing flying. Flew all 4 as expected though.

RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
My entire fleet stays on trickle charge and ready to go.
But depending on my mood, I choose ONE plane. |
RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
Mostly two, sometime three if I can squeeze another in the car.
I figure that taking two means that if one is not 100% I can still fly. I also try to take planes with different flying characteristics to give some variety to the session. If I am flyin a plane for the first time like cruzomatic I like a warm up plane. Terry |
RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
Just one...that's all I have :(

RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
Whatever I am flying that day, and a foamie! Gotta have a foamie!
|
RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
As many as are in the trailer. Depends on how many are in the shop in need of repair<g>.
|
RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
Just one.

RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
I bought a camper shell for my truck so I could double deck airplanes in the back. We got five airplanes in the back of my short bed chevy, me, my dad and my brother riding in the cab!
|
RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
Depends on what car I take. If I got the room usually two planes and a heli. If not much room the just the one plane.
|
RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
I can fit 2 max in the car luckily I fly 1/2a, unluckily I drive a miata..Rog
|
RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
Depends on the day. But on a average 3 planes and 1 heli.
As for what kind of planes will that depends on my mood. I have some were around 10 the last time i counted. The heli is the easy one its a caliber 30 the only one i got. |
RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
Depends on my mood and the weather (not counting contest days, that's a whole other ballgame).
Sometimes I grab an electric, charger and TX and go. Sometimes I pack in 4-5 planes. Sometimes I even take no planes at all, and still spend the whole day flying (being an instructor means burning lots of other guys fuel and not having to clean a plane :D some days) |
RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
I will generally take four, on at least two different transmitter frequencies. Crashes, dead batteries, frequency conflicts and the odd unforseen glitches don't ground me that way.
|
RE: How many planes do you take to the field?
depends, normally on my mood, dads mood and weather! on a good day i would take all my planes,
and thats not many! lol Extra 330l Super Air DJ3 (DF) and my making a F20 (DF) and a Flair Junior 60 |

At least 3 glow, as many as 5. One or two electrics as well. I can fit a lot more into an E250 Van!
If my son is with me, we will probably fly at most 3 of the glow planes. If I am by myself, I will fly no more than 2. It all comes down to what I feel like flying when I get to the field based on weather conditions, how crowded the field is and potential frequency conflicts (I hate waiting for the pin!). It is usually pretty windy at our field, but towards the end of the day the winds sometimes calm down and we can fly the electrics while everyone else is cleaning up. Picture below is from a day I "traveled light"! |
