Props for 46
 

Any comments on recommended props for a Tower Hobbies 46 on an Easy Sport 40? I currently use an 11x6 Master Airscrew, but would like to lower the pitch to see how it would impact vertical performance. I found an 11.5x4 APC, but that seems like quite a change in pitch without much change in diameter.

I use a 11 x4 on my US40 and a 10 x 6 on my Tiger 2. I've heard on this forum that 11 x 5 is the ultimate.

You don't always need to change the pitch when you change the diameter. For your situation, you could just go from an 11/6 to an 11/4. The reason to do this is to decrease the load on the engine allowing it to rev higher. Having higher revs with the same diameter will increase thrust. If you want to maintain the same load but increase thrust you will have to go to a lower pitch prop with a larger diameter. By doing this you will gain thrust by increasing the surface area of the prop blades using the same rpm.

You can try the 12.25x3.75 APC sport prop. It is for .40-.53 size engines and intended to be used on fun fly type aircraft. I use it on a Sig Somethin Extra and it pulls - hard. You need to clearance for that however - so check before you buy.

I initially worried that any 12+ inch prop was too much for a .46 but my LHS owner stuck it in my bag and said try it - next time you come in you will pay for it. I bought it and a couple of replacements last time I was in. He was right - it was amazing.

It is great for thrust and short take off runs. You will loose significant top end speed, but that is not the only way to have fun!

Another vote for the 12.25 X 3.75. I am not much for the funfly type stuff, but a friend is quite handy at turning his Magic into a helicopter. According to him, the real difference was switching to this prop. Same story...some guy sold him on it, and he will likely never leave it. To get a few extra RPM, he put a tuned pipe with it. It seems to be a great combo.
