Motoxer--You've got two great clubs in your area, both have some outstanding instructor pilots, as well as members who'd be glad to assist you at the field.

The closest one is Catawba Valley Radio Control, or CVRC, Mark McClellan would be the guy to contact; he's their President, instructor and a competitive IMAC pilot. Their field is off Rifle Range Rd. in Conover. Go to www.cvrcflyers.com and click on: contact. They are a good bunch of people, have a great flying field.

The club I belong to (I am Club Secretary) is West Hickory AeroModelers, or WHAM. We meet on the second Thursday each month at 7pm at the old FSS office at the Hickory Airport, our next meeting is Jan. 13, 2005. Our flying field is off Airport-Rhodhiss Rd about 2 miles past the airport, it's an old 1/8 mile drag strip, we have a 1000 ft paved and 1000 ft. grass runway. Come to the field in good weather most any day of the week and somebody is usually there, except on Sunday we don't fly before 1 pm due to the proximity of a couple of churches. I'd recommend coming to a meeting, someone will be happy to sponsor you ( required of new members/new flyers). We have two big (for us, anyway) fly-ins, a Warbird fly-in in June and our big fun-fly in August. Our membership runs from 7 years old to 82 years old, about 55 members. AMA membership is required to fly, as is club membership. Our website is www.wham-rc.org.

There is a third club, but I'm not sure what their status is right now. Their field will be at the old Catawba County Landfill, about 5 miles south of Newton off NC 16. They lost the field several years ago due to discovery of hazardous waste and seeping methane, they've just regained the use of the field and are in the process of revamping the pit and flightline area. I know a couple of their members, but they also belong to WHAM, and you can find out more about this group at one of our meetings.

well got to still brake in the motor an think i might wait till feb.cause im really gonna be busy an plan on buildin up my mt an the rc10 to do some racin. i also still gotta jion the ama an figure what club to jion.i thank u for giving me the links and could u tell me what this ama is about

For many fliers, the AMA is the organization that provides insurance and a monthly magazine. The AMA provides the structure for holding many types of competetion for R/C, control line, and free flight. They are active at the national level in working to protect our hobby against legislation that would negatively effect us. They also provide assistance and in some cases money, to local clubs trying to secure, or improve, flying fields. They also publish a monthly magazine that's part of your dues. There's much more that they do. Many people complain that the cost for the AMA is too high, hopefully this thread will not turn into an AMA bashing, but I think they do a pretty good job with the money they receive.

I say, PIPER CHUCK FOR AMA PREZ!!!!!!!!!!! That was well said, P.C. (you could also be Politically Correct:)). To add, almost all flying clubs require AMA mambership for the insurance coverage. Motoxer, why don't you try to make our January meeting on Thursday the 13th? If you go to the Hky airport terminal, drive around to the lower end of the parking lot behind the terminal building, the old Flight Service office is on that end facing the aircraft ramp area. There's a picnic table in front of the door, meeting is at 7pm. You can meet some of the guys and all your questions can get answered. Hope to see you. Ken

You don't even need to wait to come to a meeting. Just show up at WHAM and meet the guys. This weekend the weather is looking pretty good so there should be a decent crowd out there. If I am there I will let you have a try on the trainer cord.:D

I'm sorry I missed you! I got there around 2. We flew the Miss LA with a newly aquired MVVS .28 (stupid fast as usual), the F-18, and Spence's trainer. There was a guy who showed up to see what this stuff is all about and got a free lesson on Spence's Super Stunts via the buddy box. You missed a really cool sight, Steve had his Neiuport biplane, David had his Corsair, I had my F-18 in the air at the same time flying a decent tight pattern. It was one of the coolest sights I have seen out at WHAM in a long time.

I figgered there'd be a bunch there later today. It got breezy , and I was going to fly the L-4 today, first time since I tore the wings off, but found some hidden damage on the center supports while attaching the wings, probably would have had a catastophic failure. Only took 30 min to fix at home. Going to the sod farm in the AM to fly with Steve and Byron, I think Ethan will have his twirly bird there too. That wasn't motoxer there today,was it?

You want a LHS? If so, try Airborne Hobbies, in Conover. It's about 1/2 mile from the K-Mart on 70-Business (going away from the interstate). Look for a short set of stores with a green roof, there's a couple of Hispanic businesses in the group. Chris (store owner) or Christine (his wife) will help you out. Or you can drive to Hildebran to Leland's. Those are the two closest to you.

It was alot of fun. It's one of the eBay .15-.25 sized ARfs. I put an OS .30 4 stroke in it. First flights were on New Years eve. Only got in 2 flights cause I lost one of the strut bolts. Got in 4 more flights on Sunday. It sounds and looks great just puttering around the sky.
