The servos probably have the old connector. I think they were called "F type". The newer Futabas have J type connectors. If the servos are still good, you could use them still, but you'd need to change the connectors. I did that recently on a few of mine, worked fine. I just cut the old connector off and soldered on a new wire. However, a simpler, and probably more reliable, approach is to just take them out and replace with new servos. You can get an entire 4 channel package for $80-100. Futaba S3004, or other standard size servos, should fit in the same holes as the S28 and S38 servos.

I have some S38s and converted them. They work but the newer servos move much quicker and smoother. Since you have to other parts as well, its cheaper to just buy a new system as piper suggests.

the S28 is on the elevator...does it matter which servo is used here?...

It would depend on the plane. Since you want to use it on a trainer, it will be just fine! [8D]

For the same money you spend on the plugs and wires, you could buy bulk S3001 servos at $8 bucks apiece.

I will assume you have a transmitter that is FM. If not you will need a whole radio. You cannot economicly convert the old AM radio's to FM. If you do not have the transmitter I would suggest you get a Futaba 4 channel package. It would cost you about the same as the components. If you have the transmitter then You could just get a new reciever and battery and change the plugs on your old gear, that is one way. The best way would be in my opinion if you have a transmitter on FM is to buy a flight pack. I like the Hitec ones. They have good components at a good price. Just remember to get a crystal in the appropriate channel. Futabe flight packs must be bought in high or low band. Up to channel 35 is low band after 36 is high band. I would highly reccomend the new flight pack idea. Best of luck.
