ScienceisCool... Another tip... On the Nose wheel... You only need
a little steering input to be enough..Lt./Rt. movement... It will look
like it does not move enough, But it will be plenty...
So when you set up your Rudder servo arm, You can use the outer
most hole for the rudder side of the servo arm, But use the inner
hole on the servo arms streeing side, Then on the nose wheel gear
arm go as far out as you can.. Once you are completed with the
plane and all are charged up, turn on your transmitter, then the
on board system, tilt and hole the nose of the plane up and cycle
your rudder with the radio a couple of times.. Find a flat level spot
that will allow you to push the plane at least 3-4 feet and adjust
linkage as necessary for a stright of run as possible... The above
adjustment is done after you have all your trims set as close as
possible first... Always get the trims set with the linkages first, then
fine tune with the radio....
This is no big deal... But another tip if you have extra parts or an
instructor that's extra helpful:-) On first time flyer's, it's good to
add a "soft" spot on your throttle linkage or the use of a cable...
My instructor did this for me on my Avistar... He cut the throttle
pushrod to get it shorter then he made up the difference with some
lite nylon rods... This could save your carb. in cases of "newbie" and
old timers Nose first landings....

I take that back... My instructor supplied the "screwed one sided rod(2)
then added his supplied nylon.... Never tested it:-)... But made sense
to me... And the Biggest thing.... My instructor had all "my free" extra parts

Nice plane. I want that radio bad. I wouldnt mind having 2 extra channels and the main thing is the memory on it. I will be buying one soon

Your battery needs to be both padded and installed in a manner where it will not move around during maneuvers or hard landings. Same goes for the receiver, it is lighter than the battery pack but can also influence balance to a degree. Keep as much EXTRA weight out of the plane as you can. Remember, the further an object is from the cg the greater the effect it will have on the balance. This means that 1 oz of lead under the tail will have the same effect as 10 oz right behind the servos. (Not exactly correct but meant to give you the general idea.)

Just a thought about the mounts, they are very weak, look tough, but weak. My cousin broke open all to hell from a simple propstrike on landing, I suggest you pick up another mount of the same type at your LHS, Always read-reread your instructions,Expirence comes from mistakes.

ok, i've decided to get a new engine mount because its only 10 bucks, so no plm. if all goes well getting everything charged up and flight-ready we'll (my instructor and I) be breaking in the engine and going for a maiden flight sunday morning.

i'm getting batteries for my camera today so i'll post more pictures this evening of what i did to the mount and the overall progress.

I doubt a couple of extra holes are going to affect the strength of that engine mount very much, it's metal. The plywood fire wall will break long before that mount will, even with your extra holes. In a nose in crash, it would be better for your mount and firewall to break, than your engine block, anyway...

ok, here are the latest pics... the first one is of the engine mount with the two extra holes (second from bottom on either side), the second is of the engine mounted with the provided clamps, and the third shows me with the completed plane! :) the only thing left is hooking up the electronics.

HELLO WORLD !
Well THREAD.....you've met the plane, you've seen the student, now meet the instructor.
I have followed this thread with great interest and almost warm affection.
John and I haven't yet met and we are going out fr the test flights on Sunday weather permit.
Please ALL feel reassured that this project will come to a great conclusion. I have been doing
RC flying for more than 30 years. Never once lost a student's plane. Usually , the newer generation get soloed in about 5 or 6 flights because they have been gamers or have done SIMS as John claims.
It was different, back in the 60's..... no BuddyBoxes, no sims.
In fact one of my students remained a student for 20+ years. He died last year at age 84
there will a golden broach next Sunday, complete with pics.
RICK

Good morning John
please look closely at the two pics
this will be the TX you hold in your hand while learning
I have heard that the CONNECTING END for the cable has been changed from round to square\
refer to the backside picture and look at the plug in the middle towards the top
see how it is ROUND ?
If the plug in your new TX is square
we will have to obtain a new cable that translates from the round to the squar plug
there is such a thing.
talk to me please. enough time till Sunday.

MRBASS
Thank you.....I used your advice and have sent off for the cable. Paid a little Xtra and should arrive here before the weekend. THANKS for being so SHARP

JOHN G ( ScienceisCool)
Don't worry about the cable. I have just purchased one from Tower and it should be here B4 Sunday. I already needed one of those to accommodate my own students.

Are you READY ?

Rick,
There is such an array of different connectors for all of the different brands and generations within each brand that it is hard to keep up. I wonder what it will be next week, maybe an infra-red port like on a keyboard or mouse. No, that is not a request if you mfg are listening. Oh, what have I done now??? [:o]

You guys have fun Sunday, we'll be thinking of you and waiting for a report from both of you. No plastic bags!

Bruce;)

RE: Avistar ARF Build

rick, i have an adapter for that. it goes from round to square. it came with my real flight G2. i can send a pic later.

actually, if you have a sqaure to square maybe we could trade so i can use my new radio with my G2.

Now there's an idea needing a manufacturer. A wireless buddy box...that's a concept I would think would have a market.

Actually it would be a good idea IF it could be made to work with all of the existing boxes. Why can't the mfg get together and standardize on something for a while? A universal buddy box, what an idea. Probably not enough profit margin. Anyone out there in the aftermarket smart enough to come up with something??

Bruce ;)

Yall have a good time this weekend. I will be taking my Superstar to the air too this weekend with my Friends dad who has eben flying forever. Science, make sure you cross one thing of rubber bands at the top of them all on your wing and use at lease 5 per side, but i am sure your instructor will tell u this

RE: Avistar ARF Build

YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!

RIGHT = RIGHT rudder on the left stick ?
UP = UP elevator ( stick drives "down") on the right stick ?
ailerons = LEFT down RIGHT UP for a right input on the right stick ?
ailerons = RIGHT down LEFT up for a left input on the right stick ?
UP on left stick yields Wide Open carb. intake ?
DOWN on left stick yields closed on carb. intake ?
nose wheel FOLLOWS rudder direction (left stick ) ?
IF SO.......you are OK

HOOOOOOO BOOYY

Science-

Pay some attention to that g/f until the weekend comes up. She has put up with your obsession all week and you are going to abandon her again on Sunday. Maybe you will be lucky and she will go with you. Offer to let her fly if she does. If you can convert her, that will be the easiest way to keep her happy. ;)

Bruce :)
