Smaller plane
 

ok i know i havent even flown my trainer yet, but i am wanting a smaller cheap plane to mess around with on days when i am bored and cant go to a field. Any suggestions? Electric is what i am looking at for price but glow will work if it is cheap. I just want something unde rabout a 32" span. I was thinking the new megatech A7 tornado jet. Opinions or any other sugestions?

I've been looking for a cheap electric to mess around with myself, but nothing I've seen or read about sounds both good and cheap. It seems like most park fliers are marginal with their "stock" brushed motors and NiMH or NiCd batt packs. Seems like you really need to go for brushless motors/controllers and LiPo cells, which starts racking up the $$ pretty quick. When that cost starts getting close to the cost to build another nitro SPAD, I loose interest again...

If anyone else has found a good, cheap park flier, I'm all ears too! [8D]

PKH, Search the A7 tornado jet. 32 " wing span and goes 25. I am really thinkin about it cause its only 60$ but, i dunno if it will be that nice since it doesnt have ailerons. But it would be something to mess around with when i ahve nothing ebtter to do.

Honestly, it looks like a toy that wouldn't fly very well. Most cheap electric ducted fans I've seen or read about are marginal for thrust, and this thing sounds like it has no throttle control, just rudder and elevator (2ch). Until it comes out and someone tries it or reviews it, this is just speculation, though! The only ducted fan park flier I've heard of that sounds like it flies well at all is this Kyosho one...

pkh, based on watching that video, the plane flys terrible. If I was going to go for a fun to fly electric I would go for the Grauper Funky Chiken. The plane looks like it handles well and its fairly fast(for a chicken). Its a decent size too with a 42" wingspan. Haha! Well, of the videos I've seen of cheap electric ducted fans, that's as good as it gets! It seems like most of them can barely stay in the air, at least this one could do a few loops! :)

Do one of these, a Zagnutz made out of fan fold foam. 48 inch span, cheap speed 400 motor and run a 5.5x4 MAS prop on 8 cells.
All ya need are two HS-81 servos, one for each elevon. The one I have here is a ducted fan model I call the "Fan Nutz". It flies pretty slow though but I get alot of flight time off of the 3 cell lipo batts.

Or get a GWS Cub, Tiger Moth, or Slow Stick. These things fly very well and can be flown in a large back yard (say 200 by 300 feet). Some people fly them in basketball gyms in the winter.

Forget glow power for small spaces, and personally, I'd stay away from anything that's put out by Megacrap.

Get a GWS Slow Stick. Very easy to fly. The stock motor flies it fine. With a 2 cell LiPo I can get 20 minute flights. It can also use standard servos. The only big expense is a charger. I recommend a good one that you can use for all types of batteries. I went with a Great Planes Triton.

Keep one thing in mind; under a 32" wingspan doesn't necessarily mean you can fly it in a small space, or not take it to a club field to fly it.

That HOB P-51 will be pretty fast and burn up a lot of sky, so I wouldn't recommend flying it at your local schoolyard or park. This is why I recommended the GWS park flyers, simply becasue they DO fly slowly and CAN be flown in smaller spaces.

You dont want that plane man,,its a box of balsa blocks you have to carve and sand down, I have had one for 10 years,and will probably never build it,if you want a smaller or 1/2a plane go to quantum models and get one of the Ace simple series,they have a mustang and it is a kit,,the HOB is a builders kit..to much work...trust me...Rog

Dave... are the plans for that Zagnutz on the web somewhere? Looks pretty cool. Does it fly better with the 400 motor and prop you spec'd than with the ducted fan? You said 8 cells... what size, capacity, and type of cells do you recommend?

Check out Park Zone's Stryker 27 for a good flyilng, complete and ready to go package. It's a delta wing, push prop plane that is plenty powerful out of the box, will do most all aerobatics you want. The entire package comes in the box including receiver and transmitter. Cost about $180 total and everything is there -- including charger for the battery. Only thing you might eventually want is an extra battery to fly with while one is charging. It has to be hand launched because there's no landing gear, but that also eliminates the drag gear can create too. It's not a "beginner" plane but ist'a fun one.

I'm finishing a house of balsa chea pass right now. Sells for 39 bucks on Tower hobbies, and the whole kit can be framed and ready for covering in less than three hours! Go to tower hobbies and search for chea pass. You'll like it. Takes a 10 to 15 sized glow engine. I got the os .15 la for fifty bucks. My brother already has one, and says it flies real nice. Basic stick design, but made from balsa and runs on glow, or you could convert it to electric pretty easy!

Sorry, Newbtorc, didn't pick up on your not having completed beginner training yet, so the Stryker 27 probably isn't for you. Try Hobbyzones Aerobird Challenger--all in a box, can be stored/ transported in the box, everything comes in the box, "takes a licking and still keeps ticking", flys slow and allows you to learn how. Will take a lot of "mistakes" and repair costs are minimal. Not the prettiest looking "plane" you'll see, but again, the design is to your benefit as far as being enduring :-) And, it's about $170 total too--depends on where you get it--local hobby store, or on the net. They're selling an Aerobird Extreme now, but you don't need that--just bigger and more bulky to transport and store. The Challenger does everyghing the Extreme will to--even has electronic combat modules that can be added for "in the air" combat--read the reviews .......................
