Which Stik (stick)?
 

I am planning on my second plane, and looking at the GP Big Stik 60 ARF, and the Hanger 9 Ultra Stick .60 ARF. I plan on flying either as a tail dragger. If I got the Hanger 9 I would probably go with their suggested Saito 100, and If I do the GP, I would probably go with the OS .91. Reading both manuals, the Horizon one looks a little clearer to a beginner like myself. Any thoughts?

If you're truly a beginner, a trainer airplane would be the best thing to start with.

The Ultra Stick is delivered as a taildragger; and the Big Stik has to be modified to be a taildragger. H9 recommends .82-1.00 four strokes and GP recommends .91-1.20 four strokes. Maybe the Big Stik is heavier?

I have the gp big stick .60, and it's not a heavy plane at all. I would guess that it weighs under 7 to 7.5 pounds, and that's a guess, I've never actually weighed it. I have a saito 100 on it, and can hover it at 1/3 throttle (when I can hang it--I'm just learning), but this past weekend I had it torque rolling at 1/3 throttle using a 15 X 6 prop. Great plane! (no pun intended). I absolutely love it, and it lands like a trainer! And, with that 100, you can have it airborne in less than 30 feet--no kidding!

Sorry, didn't make myself clear. I have been flying the Nexstar trainer, have soloed, and am doing well according to my instructor. I want to begin putting something else together as i continue with the Nexstar.

Specs on both plans are at 6.5 lbs.

I have a .40 size... .60 size.... .120 size H9 Stick's...I love them all!!!!

But who told you to put a 100 Saito on a H9 .60 Stick???

A OS 61 FX will fly that plane great...a OS 91 FS will fly it to the extreme!!!

With this being a "Second Plane" I would with the smaller engine then work my way up.

Just my opinion!!

Weight was the only thing I could think of that would make GP recommend a 1.20 for a plane about the same size as the US, except maybe the fact that the same distributor also sells the OS 1.20.

I've looked pretty hard at the Big Stik myself. I'm still on my trainer and hope to be ready to try a 'second plane' this summer. I've seen the US60 fly and like it but I really like the looks of the Big Stik better.

I have a lot of discussion about this with fellow flyers...but I think I think a Hanger 9 .40 size Stick with the control surface throws "Mechanically set to the lowest" is the perfect trainer plane!!!

It is one of the most forgiving planes in the air...and the easiest to land! But you have to remember you have to work your way up...as far as your flying skills!

With the H9 .40 Stick you have your first and second plane built into one...as long as you start out with soft throws...then work your way up!!

I think you are absolutely right about picking the Saito for the Hanger 9 plane. I'm not sure about who is part of whom, but I think they are distirubted by the same company.

Hanger 9 Ultra Stick .60 Saito, I was looking into that myself. Or possible a Spacewalker II. Started flying in August 2004. Bought my first plane for my birthday (September 15th), H9 Twist Saito .82. Got the radio August 30th along with RF G2 Sim. Maden September 17th. I would like to know what you Get and how you like it.

My second/third plane was an Ultra Stick 60. It can be as gentle or as manuverable as you want depending on the throws. I put an OS61FX on it and am very happy with the power that it provides. Does it hover?.... h88ll if I know, I don't always rate an engine to plane combination as to whether it will hover or not because thers is so much more to flying than hovering. You can't go wrong with the combinatioin that I have on mine. Afterall, it is only your second plane and I can assure you will like flying it. I have had 3 of the 60 sizes, and now am flying the Ultra Stick Lite with G-26 for power. It is a great design and a very predictable flyer.

newbtoRC if you are speaking about my comments, they meant for 2slow2matter...and I was inserting my typical humor. I found it funny that someone would purchase a second plane and engine combo because it can hover. I have been at this several years now and am just thinking about trying to hover....:D:D Not trying to pick on anyone in particular.

As the original poster of this thread, let me be clear. As a beginner, I certainly don't plan on doing anything fancy for a long time, but if I am going to spend close to $700 or $800 for a system, (plane, engin, radio, extra servos, etc.), I want to have a system that I can grow with for a long time.

My research indicates that the Saito 100 fits the plane well and will balance with just putting about 3 oz in the tail or moving some of the weitght aft.. That's why I am looking to that engin, not just the power.

I'd suggest a Tiger Stick with a Pro 46 for a second plane. It was my 2nd and 6th plane. Inexpensive & flies great. You'll be willing to push the learning envelope with it, because you don't have a lot in the plane. When the wind is kicking at 20+, you'll be anxious to fly the Tiger Stick.

Consider the Saito 82 in the Ultra Stick 60. It has great power for the US60 and is light enough where you don't have to put any weight in the tail to balance. That is my combination and I love it.
