NEw flyer needs advice
Hello all, i've been in the nitro car and boat scene for awhile and want to try flying...
WHat do you think of this setup i'm trying to keep it cheap to learn with (under 150) http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXCAS2&P=0 http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXBY18&P=M I don't know what i should get for radio gear... sugestions? also, i'm really interested how some planes leave thick smoke trails, like the planes you see at air shows have... Is this engine capable of doing this??? also is there a certain nitro fuel i should use for this engine? Or will the regular 20% fuel i use in my cars work? Thanks all. Reply With Quote |

RE: NEw flyer needs advice
I dont know if it is just my computer but linky no worky
|
RE: NEw flyer needs advice
I will go ahead and answer your smoke question, On your first plane, You dont necessarily need one, I would wiat till your 2nd or third

RE: NEw flyer needs advice
I have that the hobbico version of that setup (superstar select and os .40) and i like it alot. But for radio go with the 6exa by futaba, It will last much longer. Also, the smoke thing can only be done on 4 stroke engines (i think)

RE: NEw flyer needs advice
So the engine is good for that plane?
|
RE: NEw flyer needs advice
If you want to do smoke you are going to need more power and more channels. You also might want to consider a different airplane. The 40 la engine is a little short on power. The plane is ok but there are better ones out there. Look at the Hobbico Avistar, OS 46ax, and Futaba 6yg.

RE: NEw flyer needs advice
Guys you have to remember my budget..... you're giving me radios that take up the whole budget.... not even including engines or planes.
|
RE: NEw flyer needs advice
Have a Avistar, loved it, crashed it, repaired it...
About radio gear, I would suggesst a computer radio (I'm not saying the brand because I don't want to start a JR vs. Futaba thing). I got the Avistar RTF and then a Ultra Stick 60 then a Tribute and then I bought a Futaba 7CAF and now I have 2 radios one complete with Tx, Rx, and servos just sitting around. Get my drift? Hope this Helps, IBrakeForNobody PS: Go for a Futaba :D |
RE: NEw flyer needs advice
Well the problem is that the cheapest radio you can get is over 100$. and that is a 4 channel unit. the tower trainer is 69$ and i think the super tiger 40 is on sale right now for 54$ and it has a little more power than the os40la. There you are at 113$ without shipping or misc parts. The cheapest combo is 240$ with the la tower radio and tower trainer.:(

Reply With Quote If you can afford it go ahead an get at least a 6 channel radio something like a JR-662 or a JR-6102 it will save you money in the long run because you will not have to upgrade for your next plane and they have a 5 and 6 model memory. I agree with Paul about the Tower Hobbies 40 size trainer and .40 engine it may not handle windy days very well. I'm building a SIG LT-40 right now and I love it already. It has a wing span of almost 6 feet and I've never heard anything bad about it. You can power it with a .46. Thats my 2 cents. Mike |
RE: NEw flyer needs advice
have you checked the RCU marketplace. i dont know what trainers are for sale but it may be worth looking her are just a few i know that they are a little more money but it is only $60 more for a better plane

RE: NEw flyer needs advice
If you are getting new stuff it will be alot more expensive than your budget. Its expensive, but well worth it. Also, You might want to try an electric plane but if you get a good one the radio problem still exists
|
RE: NEw flyer needs advice
i am not an expert on engines and new to this myself. but ive done alot of research and i have been told that the os la engines are poor preformers. you may want to look at the os fx or os ax .46. if price is the concearn ive been told you cant go wrong with the thunder tiger 46.

RE: NEw flyer needs advice
pauluk2w, If I had found something like that a year ago, I would of never bought my Nexstar. That is a good deal. And Redrider, almost everyone I know that started with a 4 channel radio has sold it or given it away, including me. Wait, save some money, and get a 6 channel at least. There are some 60 size RTFs that come with 6 channel radios. Not computerized, but 6 channels. And once you get the radio, you will not have to buy anymore. And consider a package that comes with a sim of some sort. It is incredible the difference a lot of sim time makes.

RE: NEw flyer needs advice
Hmmm....60 size RTF w/ 6 channel non-computer radio....

RE: NEw flyer needs advice
I beleive there is nothing unused that fits your budget. Try going to the field. You will almost surely be donated something. And you can always try the Pay it forward program. Its where people donate stuff they dont need. If you need a radio im sure there is someone who has one waiting for you. As for the tower hobbies trainer, im getting one also. I think the price is great, and hey, your not gonna sit with that trainer your whole life. Im only using mine for about two seasons, and poof taking radio equipment out, putting it into a glider and doing something new.
