How are master/slave trainer systems set up?
So I have a Futaba Skysport 4YF 4-channels and a Futaba Conquest 6-channel. I want to make the Skysport the slave. How would I set it up? I bought the cord but it doesn't specify which one is going to be the master. Does the slave require a battery and crystal, or does the master provide that and the trainer switch just switches to stick controls that come from the slave? Also could I make the dual rates on the master work when the slave is on?

I'm not sure on a Futaba but I think its the same, as on my airtronics
The master is really the radio that has the same crystal as the reciever in the plane... If both of your radios are on the same frequency, either can be the master, the slave/buddy box has to be off with the ant. down and the sticks and trim get activated on the slave as you push the trainer switch on the master... On the dual rates... I'm not sure, but I would think they may work... But why??? If their ready for dual rates, you don't need the buddy box... Make sure all the controls match the plane... I.E. with the master and plane on, sticks centered(same stick position on both radios).. activate the slave/buddy box the controls on the plane should remain in the same position with the trainer button/switch pushed or released... |

With futaba radios, the slave radio should have no crystal and no battery. When the slave is hooked up to the back of the master TX it would recieve its power from that. If i remember rightly the conquest didn't have a Snap-roll switch so there shouldn't be any programing on the master TX. Course you should trim the slave radio and make sure settings are where they are supposed to be before you bring it up. So when the trainer switch on the master is engaged the slave TX wont have an adverse effect on the plane.

My tower order will be here next week so I can check it out. I might just make the Skysport 4YF (no dual rates) the master and the conquest the slave. I just figured it would be nicer to land with the rates on the aileron. Thanks a lot!! :D

When using Tx's with manual trim pots frequently the pots (trim levers) on the two Tx's won,t match up well. Just setting the trims of both radios in the same place does not always get to close. Its handy on a first flight to put some one on the student box that knows how to fly and have them trim the airplane on the student (slave) box while you hold the trigger.
Another way to do this is with the airplane on the table using the master keep triggering the buddy box and look at each control surface one at a time. Adjust the slave box trims so that the surface does not move at all when the master triggers the buddy box. John |

I think in this case I'd do both, starting on the ground and later doing it in the air.. Thanks for the tips.

I buddy box Futaba's just about every weekend. You do not need to remove the battery or crystal. You do need to keep the slave transmitter turned off so it will not actually transmit. You can not use the dual rates, mixing or exponentials if equipped. You do need to check and correct any servo reversing as needed. Check trims like John Buckner said and if changes are made after takeoff it may be wise to have experienced flier trim slave box for you. This should work for you.
