Bought Plane, Built Plane, Crashed Plane...What should I do now?
 

I just got back from field, I crashed my kamdax mirage 2000. this is my first rc plane ever(I know, probably not the best choice for a beginner), and it crashed after its first hand launch. This plane was built according to the instructions exactly, and the cg was correct, but it just went nose-first into the ground. All the equipment inside alright(hitec focus 4w/two hs55's). I'm thinking I should transfer the motor and radio stuff into a more suitable trainer rather than fix this plane for now...what do you think? The area by nose cone is just broken into several foam pieces, could be repaired by glue or maybe not...

Without seeing pics I can't be sure but I'd be willing to bet it is an easy fix. Problem is I'm betting you don't have the experience necessary to accomplish this task.

I'd suggest piecing it back to with small amounts of white glue or foam safe CA. Use toothpick or pins to hold the pieces in place if you are not using CA. Good luck This is really more fun if you have help. Any chance hooking up with a club??

I think I should get a different plane to learn on, maybe a small slow parkflyer I can put my existing radio in. Anyone have any reccomendations on a cheap small slow flying parkflyer that only requires two micro servos? I think Im going to fix the mirage and throw it around as fun glider.

The Easy Star http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXFRU7&P=ML is one of the easiest planes to fly. It is a foamie, so any repairs you MAY need to do can be done with regular medium CA. You do not need the foam safe CA with this plane. You need to use your transmitter, receiver, battery and ESC (requires 12 amp ). Everything else, including the motor, is there.

It is larger than your average park flyer, however, this will be a big help if there is any wind. This plane, unlike many park flyers, can handle some wind.

If you decide to get this, I suggest putting a piece of packing tape on the underside of the fuselage for about the first 10 - 12 inches. It will save the fuselage from getting beat up if you happen to land on pavement or on a rock.

just rebuild the plane , you wouldnt imagine how easy it is to repair these planes , I had my Ultrastick slam the groud after takepff at FULL SPEED , stupid me i had the alerons mixed up , ,anyway with some gorilla glue i hae the plane back together like STOCK

the pieces of foam are kind of bent and squished into malformed shapes making repairs difficult.

i would say get a hitec skyscooter. while i normally would also recommend he ezstar, the ezstar uses standard servos. of course you can just carve new holes for mini ones if you wanted. the skyscooter would allow you to just plug everything in and fly.

i would say the kamdax planes are good 5th planes. even the gas versions are hard to fly even by the OWNER OF THE COMPANY. yes, i have seen the owner of kamdax flying his planes and i've seen them break into a thousand pieces right in front of me (he has NOT passed pilot etiquette). he takes out the glue and some tape and within a few hours, he's back flying. so they aren't difficult to fix.

kamdax planes need a lot of speed to fly. they aren't slow flyers so you probably didn't give it enough ooomph in the run and toss and you probably tried to get it to gain altitude too soon, stalled and crashed. even watching the owner fly, you really have to let it stay level for a long time until the plane builds up speed and then start climbing. it is about the worst first plane you can buy. first since they are both duct fans, they have no prop wash so none of the control surfaces are effective until speed is built up. second since the mirage is a narrow delta wing, it is very unstable at low speed and high angle of attack. i'd suggest you reconsider this plane altogether. buy yourself a skyscooter and learn to fly. then buy yourself a warbird. then maybe, just maybe, you're ready for this mirage.

This is my cub in the foreground and his Mig15 in the background. He flew all his models there including the mirage and some passenger jets. Even with the glow version he didn't put on the landing gear most of the time and he never in my recollection took off from the ground.

There seems to be a natural reluctance for some beginners to seek out help. Especially if you're younger. I started R/C at 13 and crashed a bunch of planes. I finally got some help and then I was on my way. Don't make the mistakes I made, just go get some help. Clubs more often than not are eager to help beginners. I am a trainer with my local club and I like nothing better than teaching someone to fly.

As far as your choice of planes goes, don't buy anything yet. Go check out a club. They will probably have some good suggestions.

I agree. If you want something that is really easy, go for a GWS Slow Stick. The plane with motor is $35 and you should have everything else you need. I have one and it is a lot of fun when I don't feel like driving to the flying field. You can use either standard or mini servos.

Get a good job if you are going to keep trying with no help. You will continue to crash like this.

Get someone to help you, and you can learn to fly without crashing. Think of the time and money you will save!
