Transporting Plane to the Field

Does anyone have any advise on transporting planes to the field in a pick-up. Looking for someway to tie down the wing and fuselage in the bed. Are there any kits for this or does anyone have plans that you can build?

Here is the rack I made from 1X2's and 1X4's. I lined the rails with foam and made a pull handle from nylon rope. I secure the plane and wing with rubber bands over the top secured by screws on each side. The weight of the whole thing keeps it in place. Only time I had a problem with it sliding around was on the freeway on a windy day, otherwise, for a trip across town to the field at 45 mph, it is secure.

I use two spring loaded shower curtain rods covered in pipe insulation foam. I then use the metal shower curtain hangers as hooks for #64 rubber bands.

Install the rods cross ways in the bed, set the wing and fuse on the rods, position the hangers one on each side front and back of the wing and fuse, hook the rubber bands to one hanger and stretch over the wing and fuse and hook to the other hanger. Use a single rubber band for both ends of the fuse and two rubber bands tied together for the wing.

Cheap simple and has gotten me there for years. One thing change the rubber bands often the sun will deteriorate them. When I flew band on wings I would fly the bands twice then put them on the bars to keep them rotated.

Good ideas

All good ideas - that shower curtain rod thing sounds good.

I am the king of el cheapo so here's mine.

I originally used an old beach blanket over the wing laid in the bed to one side, bricks or whatever as ballast to hold balnket secure over wing. My fuse fits in the cab, spinner at the floorboard. My field box fits on seat next to plane. I have an F150 standard cab.

It is rainy season here in miami, beautiful days sprinkled with showers. Now i use a peice of visqueen (sp?) plastic sheet instead of the blanket - watertight.

My method

Take a look at this thread I posted a while back the only problem is that you might have problems with the wind.

Also take a look at my plans for building a trailer.
