Did I do Wrong?
 

I bought my first plane today. Went by the LHS and they had a Sig LT-40 ARF that they have had in stock for some time on sale for $125. After talking to the salesman for awhile he mentioned that the plane had been there so long that they just wanted to sell it. He said if somebody would come in and make him an offer he might even sell it for less. Well, to make a long story short I now have a Sig LT-40 ARF that I paid $110 out the door. My question is, this is an older version, as it uses rubber bands to hold the wings down. Has Sig made any other improvements to the LT-40 that I may miss because my new plane is the oldewr version? Thanks in advance, and I look forward to joining the ranks of RC pilots.

The LT-40 is a good plane so $110 isn't bad. No problem with the rubber bands. I have heard that the forward section of the fuselage is weak, but a quick search should let you know if it is a real problem. (my gut tells me that it isn't a real problem.)

You actually got a pretty good deal. You will love that plane and even the older ones flew very well. Just follow the directions in the manual and it will go together really well. If you have questions either do a search here on RCU using LT-40 or start a new thread.

I can't comment on the price you paid, all USA prices seem cheap compared to Australia.

You have an excellent training model. Now follow the multiple threads to find a club, an instructor, a flight box and associated fueling and starting paraphenalia. Not to mention the vehicle or trailer to transport all your models to the flying field. I bet they didn't tell you in the Hobby Shop that models reproduce asexually.

If you stick with the hobby this time next year you will have at least three models:)

campbec makes several good point but he did forget one thing, like kids, model also get bigger and more expnesive with time and if you can limit yourself to only 3 in one year you are doing great. :D

I never have more than 5 in flying condition but I usually replace most all 5 every year. I just sell them and move to bigger toys.

This hobby quickly becomes and addiction. There is a minor issue with the fireall and simply coating it with epoxy before you mount the engine on both sides as best as you can will take care of that. The outside will e easy, the inside is a bit harder but not impossible.

Besides, when you become bored with it as a trainer then you can convert it to a taildragger and it becomes a whole new plane. They also make good planes for towing gliders, put a set of floats on it, and a host of other things that the LT-40 is good for.

What are you going to do when something like a 747 or C5A is the only toy that's bigger than what you've got? :D

You know I never gave that a thought...:eek: any ideas. I just thought of one, I'll just start doing Jets, that's one sure way to clean out my bank account quickly by then I will be ready for the C5 or 747 :D

The LT-40 is a great airplane. I have the newer version and you can convert yours to bolt-on wings real easy. Get it built, get it flying, and KEEP ON KEEPIN ON.

The LT-40 is great...

I think the Kit comes with rubber bands and the ARF comes with bolts nowadays.... either works just fine... just remember to use enough rubber bands....


I learned on the LT-40 and love it... it iwll be my float palen this summer.......

You will do fine with it! and the price you paid is fine!

Yep. I started out with a Sig Trainer 2 years ago, then 3 U Can Dos, a Midwest Profile Extra. 2 spads, 50 foamies, a 30% Edge 540T and.. Heres what I have now..... 37% Ultimate Bipe w/BME 110!![X(] I dont know where it came from, I just woke up about 2 weeks ago and it was in my garage and there were a couple thousand bucks mysteriously missing from my checkbook:eek:.. Thats my story and Im stickin to it. [8D]

After I fly the crap out of it for a year or two. I strip it down, check out the frame an recover in an entirely different color scheme. its like a whole new plane. I have a Shoestring starting its third season. If it survives, l am considering that neon hot pink this fall. Here is the WM Midget Mustang I did last year

Great plane, great price. OS 46 AX for a engine. ditch the wire landing gear for aluminum. The wire will flex and stay flexed, causing you to, after 4 or 5 landings have to reshape it. After youve soloed , you will want to change it. I used 8 bands on mine and I fly in oklahoma with 15-25 mph winds. 11x5 or 11x6 Master Airscrew,,,,,,go for it.....

I recommend at least 10 bands if not 12. I am teaching a friend to fly and we lost his LT 40 a few weeks ago in high winds. I imagine the winds around 150 feet were probably close to 35 MPH that day (at least gusting to). All 10 bands snapped and the wing came clean off while trying to buck the wind. Can you say Yard Dart?

After I get through cleaning out my bank account from flying jets I'll skip over the C5 and 747 and move right onto the Space Shuttle.

The view from space is a view I would give anything and everything to see in person just once.[X(]:D

The lt-40 is a very SMOOTH flying plane. Perfect Trainer. Not jerky at all.. You'll love it

bubba, just LT-25. I figure there the same thing though besides the Landing gear.

I have the newer version with a os 46la on it and she flies great. That engine will give you enough power to get out of most trouble. 8 loops and can do more but got board. The only thing is the alerons response is slow that it can barely roll. But this is from a guy who was flying the sig Kobra with a K&B 45 sportster on it. Had to come back slow before I brought her out of the hanger :D
