sub micro servo on dominator 500
The only stupid question is the one you don't ask. I,m building a lanier dominator 500, putting a os fx .25 on it , useing standard tail setup. Going to fly for sport only, can I use sub micro servos? I ask because I have 2 hs 55,s hitec, and a nes 241 jr, from a electric I'm not useing

RE: sub micro servo on dominator 500
Hi!
Hs 55 is too small. Hs 85 will do fine though. But Hs 225 is much safer/better to use. Regards! Jan K Sweden |
RE: sub micro servo on dominator 500
As Jan said those park flyer servo are only going to cause grief. By far the most cost effective and popular set up for any Quickee even .25 powered ones (sometimes referred to as 'Slo Quickee' some locations race this set up) is Hs 225 on all surfaces and not metal gears. The throttle is usually HS85. Even HS 85's on surfaces is not enough particularly on ailerons, save the grief.
You will love the airplane but do yourself a favor and get an appropriate flight pack and enjoy. Some thoughts on first flights. If you are using Quickee gear and tail skid, All take offs are done at full throttle fully spooled up with someone doing a release for you. Doing this makes t/o very easy but a slow throttle up t/o as in a sport plane will result in the purchase of a lot of props among other things. Landings are always easier deadstick and this is the normal way to do it. Landing with a idling engine always causes problems. Deadstick this type airplane is very easy to land. Always start out with low throws typicallty the throws are far less than an ordinary sport airplane. John |
RE: sub micro servo on dominator 500
HS-85 metal gear servos should be able to handle it up to a certain point. If you aren't actually racing, I'd say they are fine. They are rated at about the same torque as most basic standard servos.
I run them in my combat planes, which are a little smaller and not nearly as fast as a pylon ship going full tilt (My fastest hits a tad over 90 on a radar gun. Fast, but not pylon fast). But we pull harder in the turns and are generally rougher on our gear. The only issue might be in the mounting, those servos only use 2 screws, which just is not as solid as a larger servo that uses 4 screws. I might use a 225 on elevator and an 85MG on aileron (single aileron) or one on each aileron for a duel setup. You could probibly use HS-81MG's if you use duel aileron servos and save a little cash. |
RE: sub micro servo on dominator 500
This is nowhere to save cash, in fact you are already doing that by using Hitec. Hs 85's are inadaquate on any of the surfaces. Thinking that metal gear 85's is OK is a mistake. Even metal geared 225's soon become very sloppy and while this may be alright on an airplane that uses very large control throws but certainly not on one that requires very low throws. The result will be very poor centering and an airplane that always hunts on whatever axis that is effected. In this application and yes even the 'Slo Quickees' plastic gears are superior. Fast airplanes with tiny surfaces and low throws centering is vital.
Every Q500 avalible in the US in the last six years are all Two aileron and one servo. Never seen a single aileron Quickee. Some have experimented with two ailrons servos to no advantage except some total weight gain. While this is not a rule book racer. The 85's are less than the required thrust by the rules when run on 4.8 volts for quickees. The rocking problem of the the eighty series is aggrivated by the frequently stiff aileron linkages. IC I would urge you if you want to really want to enjoy that airplane to use the tried and well proven package used by virtually every racer in the country that are not JR users. And this certainly applies to Slo Quickees. John |
