Where can you fly?
 

Hi all,

There's a huge perfect field down at our local middle school. Is it illegal to fly there on the weekends? I called and the women said she had no idea.

Evan, I see you are in Canada so I would suggest you see the MAAC safety code (www.maac.ca) to answer this question. It would depend on what you are flying and what structures surround the field you mention . Park flyers are to my understanding, the only type of rc aircraft that are permitted to fly in an area that is not a designated RC flying field. Hope this helps.

ooop! I'm not in canada, rather in the middle of pennsylvania! hah

I'm flying the aerobird challenge. i have previous R/C experience, but not since I moved here.

Sorry about that . I interpreted BC as British Columbia. So now I would suggest you consult the AMA safety code. Seems to me they are pretty close in regard to this.

I dont' see anything in the AMA code it. I understand not to fly around people, buildings, etc... I'm just asking about the legal question of is it tresspassing or whatever to fly at the school?

if your just talking about trespassing then consult the school. It is their property and so is their decision to whether you can fly there or not.

If you have permision from the land owner, in this case the city or county, you can fly ANYWHERE you like...

I have flown for over 10 yearsand have only been a member of AMA for the last three. The AMA does not govern the LAW about flying models, they only govern the LAWS for there insurance policy to cover you.

Just like people say you cannot launch fireworks from a model without the permission from AMA, this is nopt true if you are on private land and the land owner does not care...

Just use common sense, be safe and have some fun!!!

for that plane, i wouldn't be too concerned, just go an fly. if you were flying a glow plane, then you would certainly want permission.

Hey,

You could ask your local police if it is legal or not. They are the ones that you should worry about if you are tresspassing.

With an Aerobird, I wouldn't worry too much. But use common sense. If there are other people around, using the facilities, I wouldn't, if it's empty and quiet go ahead.

The police may show up and say you can't, but if they don't, an electric in that size isn't really an issue.

Remember it's easier to get forgiveness than permission. Asking someone's permission puts them on the spot. They're afraid they'll be responsible for any mishap if they gave you the go-ahead, therefore it's safer to say no. If you just go, then someone has to complain before it becomes an issue, and if you fly safely and responsibly, who's gonna gripe? Most will be entertained.

Well I just noticed a sign up at the school that says "No Tresspassing After Dark" So now i feel much better. Sadly, I always go at bad times and there seem to be one or two people playing lacross or something on that beautiful field! oh well. Its a great local, about 1/4 mile square, and on and edge of teh square there's a huge steep hill that would be great to control from!

You can fly at the school. It's public property. The only concerns they have are (1) the safety of kids, so you couldn't fly during school hours, or any other time there were school activities going on (practices, field trips, so on), and (2) protecting the property of the public--so they might have a fence around their expensive playground equipment or so on. Other than that, the field is all yours--especially on the weekends when no one is there. I fly at our high school sometimes--same situation, large open field....

Access to school grounds by the public is most likely governed by your local municipality, or school district. Laws can vary from state to state, and community to community. Contacting the school would be the best way to determine if the field is open to the public during non-school times. Better to find out before hand than have to deal with a citation.
