Big mistake - HELP!
 

In the process of building Sig Something Extra ARF. When gluing the CA hinges on the second wing I forgot to align the outer edge of the aileron to the wing and thus, have a 1/4" overhang on the inside edge next to the fuselage. How can I fix this?

The way I see it, you have 2 choices. You can either sand/cut the aileron to fit, or you can cut the hinges, reposition the aileron, cut new hinge slots and then glue the aileron correctly.

I would recommend cutting the hinges b/c I don't know how it will affect the flying characteristics of the plane to have 2 ailerons of different sizes.

Maybe some of the more experienced builders will offer different (ie better) suggestions...this is just my $0.02

Nope, no better way than what you pointed out.

You'll need to go to the LHS and pick up some more CA hinges. Cut the old hinges off. Use an x-acto knive to cut new hinge slots next to the old ones. Then insert the new hinges and re-glue them.

I know it seems like a disastor, but take a deep breath and relax, it's not a big deal at all.

I would cut the excess off, and then cut 1/4" off the inside of the other aileron.

The extra 1/4" on one side won't matter, but by cutting both, they won't look uneven

yeah... i would go w/ cutting off the hinges and get CA hinges. good luck, you'll have a great time w/ this plane

How about just CA'ing a 1/4" to the other aileron? Then it looks like you meant to do it... ;)

Tell the guys at the field that it's an "aerodynamic counterbalance". They'll never know... :D

The easiest remedy is to do as Minn suggested. If the aileron is OK at the outboard ends, just cut the inboard opposite side to match the 1/4" mistake. The inboard portion of an aileron is no where near as effective as the outboard, so make sure the outboard is correct and just match up the inboards. You'll be fine.

IF they have not been covered yet, you could try debonder. I would not use it on covered parts. It may be fine, I just have no experience on bebonder with covering.
