Evolution .46 tips?
Got a new Evo .46 and was wondering if anyone has any tips for the "break-in". I know they say it doesn't really need to be broken in, but I have a hard time believing that.
What have you guys done? Maybe run a bit rich for a while? |
RE: Evolution .46 tips?
Go with what the manual says. If it says no break-in, then it doesn't need it. Now for the real world. I've had 3 students with the Evolution motors and all 3 of them flew great with no break-in. You should be fine right out of the box.

Same here...it ran fine right out of the box.

RE: Evolution .46 tips?
You always want to run a new engine rich--even after "break-in." The factory has broken this engine in for you so you can immediately fly it. Run it a few extra clicks rich for the first gallon or two, then lean it up to about three clicks rich of max RPM and enjoy. This is one smooth engine!

Re: "Run it a few extra clicks rich for the first gallon or two," < its not a ringed engine and its supposed to be factory run in so I don't see that thats necessary. Maybe for a tank or 2 just to make sure the engine runs stable and then the 2 or 3 clicks rich from max rpm should be fine. [8D]

Fatsky..
This is from experience. Until I got a gallon of fuel through mine, it was cranky, and I had several dead sticks. I richened it up, and it quit dying on me in the air. After a gallon or so, I was able to lean it out and all is good now. |
RE: Evolution .46 tips?
Fair enough. ;)

2slow,
can I assume that you misspelled Fastsky's name by mistake? Or was there a comment hidden there? :D |
RE: Evolution .46 tips?

No harm intended, fastsky. |

RE: Evolution .46 tips?
Well, the Evo .46 I have is okay once its warmed up a little. When I first bought it new, I couldn't get it started period! Found out that the low needle was screwed completely shut. So, I don't buy the fact that they say these engines are broken in at the factory.
Plus, I took off both adjustment limiters which I feel are completely assinine. The only problem with mine now is that once you push the throttle to full, the rpms increase but don't reach full power until after about 6 seconds or so. I'm thinking about switching over to 15% nitro and using an OS #8 plug to see if that will do anything. Like I said, the engine runs okay. I had it in a H9 Twist. Its now going into a Sig Kougar. Dave,
It could be that the low speed is set too rich if you're getting that delay. I had that same problem with my Evo engine, along with lots of other problems. I called Horizon up and they said to send it in (it was still within the warranty period). A week later I had a shiny brand new Evo on my doorstep. I slapped it in my plane and haven't had any problems with it since. Might be worth a call to Horizon... |
RE: Evolution .46 tips?
If the low speed is set too low, why would you want to send it to Horizon? Why not just adjust the low speed needle instead?
|
RE: Evolution .46 tips?
ORIGINAL: RCKen If the low speed is set too low, why would you want to send it to Horizon? Why not just adjust the low speed needle instead? a) it needs more tinkering or b) the motor needs to be replaced (as it was in my case). Just giving him a couple of ideas. |
RE: Evolution .46 tips?
also, the flywheel on those things will cause a bit of a sluggish wind-up. Replace it with a normal prop driver, and you should notice a bit more pep--would be much better for the 3 D plane!

RE: Evolution .46 tips?
Does the EVO 46 preform as well as the OS Max 46 AX? Just a thought. It would seem that the Super Tiger 46 would be a better choice for pure power? I'm looking for the best bang for my buck?
