Alone, alone, all alone...
I don't know how you guys are, but I'm all alone here...I live in a middle class sub-division "hood" and I'm the only one here with this hobby. Nobody to talk to, share info, hang out with. Even at the field, now that the summer came most (95%) of the guys fly in the morning 7am to 11am and then the field is closed. Yes, I have the key from the gate but flying alone is no fun. I went a few times in the afternoon (1pm - 3pm) after work and its a ghost town there. Is this thing common or am I the exception? Life sucks!

If it were me, I'd consider it a blessing. Do what I do. I always take a cell phone with me, just in case, and a transistor radio and a good cigar. Enjoy. Just becareful.

RE: Alone, alone, all alone...
Kaoma... It's the same here... Around this time of year you have
to beat the heat, So most the flying is done from sunup to about noon... It's is better when other members are around... So I go in the early mornings, But when I want to practice something I like to go later when few or no members are around and I have a free sky/runway:-) But I do bring a phone hust incase... Have you tried to share your hobby with work buddies, friends and family?? |
RE: Alone, alone, all alone...
Same for me. I like to fly the last few hours before dusk. The prevailing winds here are from the south or the north. So the runways are situated north to south. I prefer to have the sun behind me. And here in Houston, it is very hot in the afternoon. The evenings, however are very pleasant. Especially if you have a little shade and a breeze. Plus, that evening sun is pretty. But no one else thinks like me. They all fly in the mid-day sun, poor b_____ds. So I am all alone. Often it is tuff to manage the enthusiasm to load up the car and head out. But that fads away quickly once I get rolling.

RE: Alone, alone, all alone...
:)Almost all my flying is alone. Same kind of thing you have. That's what's so nice about the internet, you can share with them and I've met some great people that share the same hobby as me, are humerous, informative, and sympathitic (thank heavens). I enjoy the time alone and when I crash (way too often) I have time to reflect without all the questions, "Why'd you do that? What happened" Do you always do that? How many planes have you crashed?" Once in a while I have a friend that joins me early in the morning, but he's left handed.
Thanks, Barry |
RE: Alone, alone, all alone...
Alone is heaven....nobody to witness your f...ups, but also nobody to witness your superb aerobatics, etc.
Seriously though, I'd prefer to fly alone or without many around. You don't have to wait too long for a fly, no congestion so less chance of a midair, and in my opinion, just as enjoyable. Just take a cellphone along in case of emergency. If I want to socialize with like minded people, I can call any number of them for a beer and chat. Also, there's this site for information etc. |
RE: Alone, alone, all alone...
I like it more alone at the field. I enjoy having a few cold ones while im flying. The AMA freaks at our field get all jazzed up when I have an open beer next to me field box. So when I get out there alone I can have a few beers, fly my plane, sometimes I even bring along my little charcoal grill and fry up a few brats for lunch.
Anyone want to join me... beer, brats, flying. Nothing better |
RE: Alone, alone, all alone...
Beer + flying?
Not only stupid, but also incredibly irresponsible. |
RE: Alone, alone, all alone...
The problem in AZ is the heat. Most guys there are sitting in front of the air conditioner by noon. Invite a few of them out later in the day to fly with you. You never know, some just may show up.

ORIGINAL: 2slow2matter Beer + flying? Not only stupid, but also incredibly irresponsible. Now back to the thread. I do prefer to be by myself for the majority of my flying, but it is nice to have a few guys to shoot the breeze with once in a while. |
RE: Alone, alone, all alone...
Thanks deadeye.
For the record I do like to have one or two beers when flying, I by no means get drunk. Flying RC is an enjoyable and relaxing hobby. I prefer to fly with not a lot of people around, over 8-10 things get crowded. Ry |
RE: Alone, alone, all alone...
I've had a few beers in Cross Plains, never flew though. (May have fallen):)

RE: Alone, alone, all alone...

RE: Alone, alone, all alone...
And you, sir, don't preach to me. I have a strong conviction against drinking alcohol while doing anything that could potentially involve the safety of others. If I'm working in town, five miles from the airfield, and someone's plane comes into town and hits me, then that's my business. I didn't hijack the thread--he mentioned he like to drink while flying, and I said I thought that was wrong. Replying to a topic already thrown out in a thread DOES NOT constitute hijacking. Why don't you just go have another beer and chill out. Don't tell me what to do on a public forum. This is a beginners forum, and I want it clear to beginners that it is NOT OK TO DRINK AND FLY. Good luck getting one penny out of your AMA insurance if you have alcohol in your system during an accident.

RE: Alone, alone, all alone...

RE: Alone, alone, all alone...
And then we can find ourselves an AMA preacher, tie him to a tree and let him watch! Flying alone is the best....

I'm sure he doesn't drink alone (nobody does that, right?) and I'm sure he doesn't fly after he's had a few beers, and I'm sure he doesn't drive home after having a few beers. He just wanted to watch all the indignant posts and rebuttal replies. Best not to spend much effort on this one. (of course if he drinks alone before driving or flying, he's an alcoholic and will kill somebody sooner or later, but he was probably just a troll.) Cheers, Dave Olson |
RE: Alone, alone, all alone...
I agree with 2 slow..this is a beginners forum and drinking and flying are not allowed according to AMA rules and most club rules. Not against having a beer just don't think I want someone drinking at the field.

RE: Alone, alone, all alone...
Your location may dictate how most flyers react. If its in the 80s by noon and climbing then most flyers may want to get their flights in early and then head for shade. At our field it can get very windy in the afternoon but its almost always calm before 10 AM. So if I want to be sure to get at least some flights in, I am all set up and starting my engine by 8 AM. By 1 PM most of the flyers have lots of flights in and are packing up ready to head home. Thats why I suggest to new flyers that need buddy box training to be at the field by 9 AM. It usually doesn't go over well when the new flyers don't show up unitl 3 in the afternoon. By then its almost always too windy for a flat wing trainer and most of the guys are tired from flying their own planes all day. [8D]

RE: Alone, alone, all alone...
Flying alone sure isn't as much fun as with a few friends. And flying for a goal oriented activity, like racing, combat and funfly competition is icing on the cake. On a calm day, it is fun to tether helium baloons out in the field and see how many passes it takes to hit one. This is fun even if you are alone. I do quite a bit of flying out in the middle of nowhere, and if I want to have a beer [and a brat] while flying, then that's what I'll do. If I'm at a club field, then no, the price to pay if I did some harm would be too high. Use some discretion, that's all.

RE: Alone, alone, all alone...
OK! NOW YOU GUY'S DID IT!
All this talk about brats and I had to fire up the grill on this a.. er..fine a..cold..dreary..misty evening. MMMM Brats! |
RE: Alone, alone, all alone...
ORIGINAL: RhyanO Anyone want to join me... beer, brats, flying. Nothing better I wish I had your problem...or at least less people. Everytime I go out, there are like 60 people at the flying field. I have to wait up to 1 1/2 hours between flights. [&o] |
