4* second plane and engine choice
 

Had a bad Sunday am today, piled up a WM SuperSportster 40.

Looking for a good "second plane", low wing trainer.
the following engines are a possiblity:
OS 46 fx
Thunder Tiger 46
Saito 82 FS

I like the thought of a Sig 4* 60 being perhaps more stable in wind, and wonder if the Saito is enough engine for it.
I am learning to fly, not doing 3D close in things!!

I dont have time to build, I need to arf this to get flying again.

Any thoughts appreciated!

glasrep... I have the 4*60 red ARF.... Yellow would be eaiser to see... I
have a Mag 91 4c and it flies it great and I like it... I used most of the
stock hardware except for the push rods.. They flex too much in the heat,
causing to retrim with temp. changes.. I went with some carbon fiber rods
that I had. I would use at least 4-40.. all else was stock... The build was
stright forward and fast, I just went per instructions but I did fiberglass
the wing joint, I don't think it's needed but I got in a habit of doing that.
I fly her pretty hard and have not had a problem that I did not cause:-)
I would use at least the Saito 82... She's an easy flyer and lands great!

I should have clarified, that if the Saito 82 is not enough engine then I will go to the 40 size of the 4*.

I have built sig kits in the past, (early 80's) and found them to be as complete as any on the market. I will though, need to go the ARF route to get me back in the air quickly.

I have the 40, I think a ST G-51 will do great with it. Thats what i plan on putting on mine...

For the OS and thunder tiger 46's a 4* 40, SIG Something Extra, Hangar 9 twist, Great Planes Super Sportster and a host of other 40 size planes.

The 4*60 will work with the Saito 82 It will be nice and tame and will have not allot of extra power but it will do fine for just general flying around and normal aerobatics. Once you decide you want more power the Saito 100 or the OS91 are great 4-strokes for the 4*60.

I have a 4*40 with a Thunder Tiger .46 swinging a 11x5 prop and it has tons of power. I can go vertical on takeoff and it will climb until I throttle back.

Any .46 will be excellent power for your 4*. The Saito .82 will over power it to a great extent. Since you are still learning to fly, I would stick to the .46.

I do recomment you shorten the wing by 1 rib on each side and add an inch to the rudder. Otherwise it will be pretty tame compared to your Super Sportster. Stock, the 4* is a low wing trainer.

I second what NAS19320 said (I have that same combination) and agree with Ed Moorman's comments as well. If you stick a larger engine in it, you'll have to add lead to the tail. The added weight will take away from the flying qualities.

Mine flies like a raped ape with the TT.46 and I have a ball with it. Great combination.

I have Saito .82 in a Funtana 40, so I have a feel for the power of the Saito... too much power for the 4*

I have the 4* 40 kit, not built yet and either a OS .40LA or a Fox .45 probably the Fox will go in it..if I get to it this year...Rog
