Just ordered a frontier 40...
Hello!
I just ordered a super frontier 40 from the world models. I decided to go with an super custom 40, hitec hs422 servos and a 600 mah battery pack. I"m thinking to use it as a float plane, anyone that fly this plane? I"ve heard it lands extremly slow, is that right? |
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
Hi Murdoc
That's the plane i learned on, with a .40 size engine it's as slow as a turtle on valium :D After i got used to it, i installed dual aileron servos tu use flapperons and dude, the plane just hangs in there motionless into the wind. It's a very, VERY good trainer, i soloed on it after 4 hours, it can take a very hard beating. It's just a personal opinion but 600mah seems too little, at least for a freak like me who likes to fly for 3-4 hours straight (i started using 6v - 2100mah on that plane) :) But beware, at least for me it was a pain in the "rudder" to fly it inverted with a OS .40LA [:@] Anyway... you'll love it :D |
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
Hi joesabido!
Glad to hear you was happy with the plane! How is it in takeof? do it use long runway before it gets airborne? Looking forward to fly this thing! |
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
Hey Murdoc :D
With the OS 40LA you don't have much power, that engine is kind of weak, but the plane has so much lift you can make very short take-offs (10 meters or less with headwind) or very long and fast scale-like 50+ meter take-off runs. Please have in mind that you will need an instructor if this is your first glow plane, you don't want your RC experience to last less than 30 seconds :) Be safe and have fun! Joseph |
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
This is my third glow plane, i ordered it for slow and relaxed flight!
|
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
If yuu want slow and relaxed, you got it with that plane :D
You won't be dissapointed (IF slow and relaxed is what you want :)) Good Luck Joseph :) |
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
Thanks for the replies joseph:)
My frontier is now almost ready for its maiden, the 40 engine is going real good and the weather is great! But i still have some questions to ask! How many flights do you think i can squeeze out of the 600 mah battery pack? How long flights did you get with the standard tank? Thanks, |
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
Hi again Murdoc :)
You should use some sort of battery monitoring device (such as hobbico voltwatch). I used Futaba 3003 servos and a 7ch receiver and i don't remember EXACTLY how much flight time i got with a single charge, but i think i used to fly about 4 10-minute flights with the standard battery, maybe i could have squeezed some more but i like things on the safe side, i strongly suggest you upgrade the batteries for a bigger capacity pack :D By the way, the big, thick, flat-bottomed wings serve for stable and slow flights, BUT when windy it can be a handfull since the wind will be moving the plane from side to side and up/down, so be carefull with that [:-] If you have anymore questions just let me now ;) Good luck Joseph |
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
Hi :)
It flies!! it was quite windy, nervous as i was i slowly increased the throttle to full... after 10 m it was airborne (not much power to spare!) and it flew great, 2 click on the ailerons and it flew straight and level. with reduced throttel the plane floats like a glider! think i have to install dual servos and get some flaps! I"m very happy with the frontier and hope it wil give me many nice flights! |
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
Congratulations Murdoc :D
It WILL give you many many flights :) Good job! Joseph |
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
i hope so!
but the 40 engine is to weak, want a 4 stroke in it! what about a 52 size 4 stroke? |
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
I thought you said "slow and relaxed" :D
A 52 4stroke would be nice, mostly because you'll be able to use it in another plane, i don't think it'll go MUCH faster, but you'll have better vertical performance, you'll be able to swing bigger props and you'll have more authority on the plane. Another good thing is that you may get longer flights since 4 strokes have better fuel economy Tell me how everything goes |
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
slow and relaxed is what i want! but the 40 engine is to bad! (think it is worse than a 40 la:) )
I feel that i need more power in steep turns and in climbing, it flies ok on the 40 but it isn"t strong enough to save the plane if some stupid pilot error should arrive! But i must say that this trainer flies better than the most other trainers i have seen and flown! |
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
Since i'm not really into 4 strokes, my vote would be a Super Tigre G51 or a OS .46, put a G51 with a 11x6 APC prop and watch that plane climb! :)
Joseph |
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
I"m not that into 4 strokes either so i think i a new 2 stroke will be purchased:)
Havent tried super tigre yet, is that an engine to decide on? |
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
This is the [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXFV72&P=ML]SuperTigre G51 Ringed[/link], i have one of those in a T-34 and IT PULLS! Besides for US$80 you can't go wrong and it runs great out of the box so you don't have to spend countless hours to get it tunned :D
Just follow the instructions to break it in and run it rich for about 15-20 tanks, then you can start leaning it out. Good luck [sm=thumbup.gif] Joseph |
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
then i think i go with the super tigre:)
the colour scheme on the fuselage is not sitting good after 6 tanks, i"m afraid it wil fall of....! Have you noticed anything of that on your frontier? |
RE: Just ordered a frontier 40...
Well, different weather conditions cause different effects on Monokote, my advice is that you re-seal the trim scheme with a sealing iron, if you don't feel confortable ironing your model then ask an experienced modeler for help. He will use heat to re-activate the glue in the monokote and make it stick better to the wood.
Good luck Joseph |
