Plane Storage
I want to get ideas on how to store planes in my garage with limited space. If anyone has a picture of the way they store their planes please post it. I would love to see.
|
RE: Plane Storage
I don't have a picture, but I installed a 16" wire shelf and several 12" shelf supports that I bought at Home Depot. I store the wings on the supports and hang the fuse's from the self by wrapping a 6" bungee cord around the props and hanging them from the wire shelf.
Works out good. DaveB |
RE: Plane Storage
You can hang the planes from the ceiling to take up no used space. The shelf is a great idea. I went to Home Depot and bought an aluminum garden hose hanger and hold place the plane on it hanging by the landing gear.

RE: Plane Storage
I use bicycle hooks into the ceiling with plastic pipe racks hanging from them - can place wing on one side of pipe risers and fuselage on opposite side over car or bikes or other items on floor. If profiles - put a hook on the wall and dog ear a coat hanger [place the wheels through the openings] and make the hanger hook into a loop to go on the wall hook.

RE: Plane Storage
I get to bungee cords and 2 hooks on the ceiling. This works as both a tail hangar (Hook the bunngee cords together and hang it on the horizontal stab, or a whole fuse hangar, (wrap the cords around the fuse and back to the hook.)
Also, you could make a hanging PVC Cradle. That would be fun... |
RE: Plane Storage
When I get enough planes to do this with, I'll be making my own version of this:

RE: Plane Storage
I learnt that the best way to store your planes is to SELL all that we really DO NOT need and STOP buying planes and keeping them NIB. Hehehehe ...

RE: Plane Storage
Cool ideas!! If anyone else has some, I would love to see them. A older guy who works with my wife and has been out of the hobby for about 15 years just gave me some older planes that can be recovered and look like brand new. I thought I would fix them up and either fly them or sell them. I dont even know what kind of planes they are. I will have to take some pictures and post them. So I was kind of getting an idea on how I could store them. :D

RE: Plane Storage
I personally do not do it but our club president has a piece of plywood made up the attaches right where his wing attaches. He then puts a hook in the plywood right over the CG and hangs in that way from the ceiling. The wings are stored on storage racks made from 3/4 dowel rods glued into the 2X4 wall studs.
Of course this only works on planes with one piece wings. Really simple but very effective |
RE: Plane Storage
I don't have any pics yet, but I'll post them as soon as I do. At my wife's suggestion, I hung some hollow core closet doors with clothes line. Lot of room to put your stuff. Up out of the way. Easy access with a step ladder.

RE: Plane Storage
Onlyb,
That is a sweet idea, I think I am going to go with that!! |
RE: Plane Storage
I built my own using scrap 1"x1" from Home Depot. Took me a few hours to design and build. Total cost was around 7 or so bucks. ;) I didn't have enough wall space in my garage, but have 10' ceilings, so my hanger idea worked perfectly and is light and easy to load the planes into. It also provides good support for the planes and doesn't put any pressure on key areas.
I bought brackets for all the corners for added support. I used simple soft pipe insulation for padding and a staples and zip ties to finish it off. Should be easy to build on to and extend as well. I've since added hangers for my controllers as well. http://volcanosdomain.net/images/rcp...er/hanger1.jpg http://volcanosdomain.net/images/rcp...er/hanger2.jpg |
RE: Plane Storage
You need more planes:D

RE: Plane Storage
Volcanogod,
Thanks for the pick, that is also an excellent idea. You do need more planes!!!:D:D:D:D |

patternflyer1,
That is utilizing all your space. How many planes do you have? My wife would kill me! |
RE: Plane Storage
Well, I'm not quite sure how many I have. Too many though, I know that. And my wife aint happy about them all either. She's always telling me I have to many. I just tell her "a man can never have too many planes". I also tell her that when I die, she will be able to sell my r/c stuff for alot of money. That one usually makes her happy, lol. Just kidding. I'm actually in the process of starting to sell a few. Well, I'm thinking about it. hahaha

RE: Plane Storage
Well, i can't really contribute much to this thread...but i just HAVE to say...
Some of you people have gone past hobby to addiction. ;) |
RE: Plane Storage
What, who, me? naaaa
Well, maybe a little addicted........;) |
RE: Plane Storage
No addiction here[sm=spinnyeyes.gif] I can quit anytime.:D
|
RE: Plane Storage
I agree. I quit every time I put my plane to bed.
|
RE: Plane Storage
only b,
thanks for sharing your picks! Really cool. Actually everyone has given me a lot of good ideas. I say, forget about parking your car in the garage, that is what driveways are for. Might as well fill the garage with planes!:D |
RE: Plane Storage
Vickman and pattternflyer1,
Those are impressive fleets. How do you manage to keep the receiver battery packs charged and operational? Bill |
RE: Plane Storage
It's not easy.... I have realized that it is a little obsessive. The maintanance does take a lot of my time. I do try to put a charge in them all once a month. And cycle them every few months if I don't fly them. It's fun having so much to chose from but I find that I spend less and less time at the slope with my gliders, and more time taking out my pattern planes. The more I reply to this thread kinda makes me realize maybe I should sell some. Well maybe, lol

RE: Plane Storage
patternflyer1,
We are all just jealous of your hanger. Dont sell them!!!! |

It's not easy.... I have realized that it is a little obsessive. The maintanance does take a lot of my time. I do try to put a charge in them all once a month. And cycle them every few months if I don't fly them. I have used your method for the last five or six years and it just doesn’t seem to work for me. Every time I look at the airplanes something is not on charge that should be and something has been left on charge for days. In addition chargers and cables are everywhere and at least ten batteries need replacing. I give up and intend to try a rotating battery or batteries scheme in the future for the airplanes that only get a few outings each year. It will require modifying many of the airplanes for easy interchange of batteries. In the future I will not be putting batteries under tanks or deep inside the fuselage to correct the CG. Some airplanes will need balance weight, some will need battery boxes and some will need hatches. Most will need cable routing clean up. The transmitters that only hold one model are being retired. What a mess. Bill |
RE: Plane Storage
Futaba 9Cap solves the one plane one Tx problem.;) I only have 5 batteries and move them from plane to plane as needed via velcro in an easy to reach spot. The other part of the solution is using NiMh batteries to minimize memory. How is that light working out for you?
|
RE: Plane Storage
Yeah, so do a lot of other transmitters[:-]. I have a bunch of old ones under the cabinet that I used to have gliders on. Now they're all on a stylus, well or two stylus's. Gotta have a backup radio ya kno, just in case ya have a problem with one. I actually got a stylus and a couple of planes when my brother passed. My hanger was decent before and now just a little too much I guess. I do have two anderson chargers that make charging anything that I still have nimh's in. I'm trying to goto duralite's and nmp li-ions in all my stuff. Then I don't have that drain problem with my batteries. Ya know, the easy one's to store are the larger ones. I am having a hard time storing my 3d depron type electrics. Anyone got good storage ideas for those?????????????
Thanks for the kind words about my hanger. I am quite proud of it and no one ever normally gets to see it. Chris |
RE: Plane Storage
You need to go count them :D im dying to know how many their are!

Pegboard and large hooks works for me.:)
|
RE: Plane Storage
Ok masta, well i went out and got a rough count. I have about 23 sailplanes. Half of which are complete, the other half mostly complete. I have 3 depron type foamy's. and lets see, ummmm, well, 17 glow and one gas plane. Of which about half are rtf. I have run out of room for them so I'm trying to figure out new ways to store them. I'm gonna work on it this weekend some. We'll see how far I get. When I figure it all out I'll post. How is anyone storing there big 33 % type planes? Any pics.
I'll take some pics of the charging stuff I keep them going with also. I'm going to remount it all if I get a chance this weekend. I dunno, gonna be a nice 3 day weekend here. Although around 100. I can deal with it to get in alot of flying though. Good flying, Chris |
RE: Plane Storage
vicman,
It has taken a very long time (and many batteries) to understand and accept that a receiver battery for each airplane is foolish. You are correct the multi airplane transmitter solves half of the problem. Since I am forever finding something that has been left on charge too long or not on charge when it should be I still use NiCad’s. Batteries that travel between airframes seem to be the only reasonable alternative. The light allows more mistakes to be seen. Is that good or bad. Stop by when it is convenient and lunch is on me. Thanks again. Bill |

Once day I moved the airplanes outside to cleanup. When they were moved back inside more space existed. Don’t know why.
A few of the fleet but more exist. I prefer never to count in order to preserve plausible deniability with the female. However she has never asked. Bill |

Lots of good ideas!
Here's how I do it. I have a wall hung storage unit which houses some wings and other items. The lower cabinets are inexpensive IKEA units. There are four planes hung from the ceiling, in two cases with bungee chords around them another two by built in u-bolts attached to the models. The plywood box on the floor contains a model and can actually become a work bench at the field. Allan |
RE: Plane Storage
BillS,
Your fleet is as impressive as patterflyers. Allenfowers, your storage ideas are awesome. I have gotten a lot of good ideas from this thread. I will have to take some pictures of my stored planes when i finally get organized. |
