What are the odds?
I'd read elsewhere on RCU about this happening to someone else, and thought to myself "come ON, that's just silly.". Darned if it didn't happen to me yesterday...
Flying the Hog Bipe along quite happily...suddenly 'splutter, gurgle, pfft' says the engine, and we're deadsticking. Got her down unharmed, and started looking for the cause of the deadstick from what had, to this point, been quite a reliable engine. After some checking, I discovered the problem... The motor had attempted (and failed) to inhale a large bumble bee. I have successfully removed all traces of Eric (double bonus cool points to ANY rcu'er who gets THAT reference), and the motor runs fine again, so no damage was done. I suppose, in this hobby, you will NEVER 'see it all'. |

I've never tried to suck a bug into an engine, but I have hit a Junebug that made a pretty nice sized hole in the covering on a wing!!! [:'(]

Lately I seem to have more gnats all over my leading edges than I do glow fuel [:@]

little black and orange bug. there refered to as love bugs because they swarm, and then mate. while mating they attack at the butt and fly aroun for days that way. They are a custom paint jobs worse nightmare here in the south(i have seen cars windshields after they drove through them , with the bugs so thick they had to hang out the window to find a gas station with a squeege)

TX hit it right on the head and if they are allowed to dry on the paint or windshield then to get them off the windshield a squeegy will not work but an ice scraper will
On paint they will eat through the paint and clearcoat. If I remember correctly something on/in their bodies contains a mild acid for defense. I've seen cars so badly covered after driving through a swarm that they are most black. Just swatting them out of the air usually makes them "pop" as they are very delicate bugs |

And they make just as big a mess on a plane when you fly thru them.
I wonder how I know???? And they DON'T come off easy on a car or plane!!!!!! ENJOY !!!! RED |
