A good 2nd plane...

Hello Everyone!

It looks like that my boys and I are ready for a second plane. We've enjoyed the Sig LT40 a lot. I've returned to the hobby (flew for about 5 years...several years ago) and am having a good time teaching my sons.

Can anyone suggest a good second plane?...a tail dragger?

I'd go with the Tiger, as Britbrat suggested, or the Sig 4 Star .60. I just finished a 4* .60 ARF and was hoping to maiden it today, but we got three inches of rain here last night, and it's still raining as we speak, so not much chance of it happening today. Here's mine as it sits:

4*40 or 60 definately.

Both the planes menttioned are good. The Tiger has a more positive landing approach while the 4* has to be slowed to a crawl to get it to stop flying! I prefer the Tiger myself. You can also check out the Midstar or Super Sportster. Both make really nice 2nd type planes. [8D]

I purchased an already built 4* 60 early in the year and am continually impressed at how much it flies like a trainer.

Re: "continually impressed at how much it flies like a trainer."< which is exacly why I don't suggest this plane if someone is planning on buying a warbird or even a sport warbird next. Its a low wing but it doesn't land like other low wings. You have to slow the 4* way, way down to get it to land. Get used to this and then try landing your P51 in the same manner and you won't make it to the runway before it crashes [8D]

I had good luck with the great plains stick 40.It's a plane you can fly like a advanced trainer or sport plane.

go with the tiger, its not a floater

Yep, trainers and warbirds fly and land differently. Exactly the reason it requires training and a different ticket to fly a Cub and a F-16. Warbirds turn over and spin in at trainer speeds.

Sig Somethin Extra ... great 2nd plane

Eagle63_Flyer: I was just about to say that. I've recently ordered my second plane (and first build project)... the Sig Somethin' Extra. I'm really looking forward to this plane, as a member of our club has one and it flies beautifully.

Even though I haven't yet received my second plane (first kit), I'm still going to recommend the SSE as a second plane (kit or not, they do make an ARF).

Yeah, it makes a really nice kit. I was very pleased with the wood, instructions, and plans.
Everythings was pretty top-drawer. I made a fuel tank hatch instead of framing it in though.
Also I modified the tail wheel assembly to make a more robust setup.

Overall, fantasic kit and flier, well woth the $$$.

yeah!! What Gjeffers said. The UCD is an extremely fun plane to fly. And not all the difficult either and can be set up from mild to wild......[X(]

north40... The 4*60is a good choice.. It was my second plane.. and I
still enjoy flying it.. Flies and lands nice, and with enough power it will
do quite a bit more...

You did say you flew before, not sure what type of flying you like but
as Gary and Rob said the UCD 46 could be a good choice also, and
allow you to learn and enjoy more.... It flies very easy, can be flown
slow, and almost floats forever.... turn it up and it will do most the 3D
stuff... It lands very easy, almost too easy..... But it is a 3D plane...
which is made "light" and you do need to strengthen the landing gear
block... And Land light!! But this plane does make it easy to do that....
This plane does fly good and easy!! But it will not take much abuse...

:)For the money, the fun, the ease of flight, the easy landings I've got to go with gjeffers, raideron and CeeGee. The UCD46 is the greatest. The best thing is in a few weeks when you're ready to move on you don't have to change planes. You just increase the throws and you go to "wild". But still easy to fly. And Tower Hobbies has them on sale for $125 this month. Can't beat that value.
Thanks
Barry

Hey Gary.... We really liked the T. storms also...
I thought someone said if your not abusing it... Your not
flying hard enough:-)

Well, you did get Barry to come out a bit:D

OK I better get outta here.... I think my plane glued itself to the
table...... it hasn't moved in over a week[:o]

RE: A good 2nd plane...

I am in a similiar situation, looking for a second plane. I have flown electrics for about a year now, low wing 3d planes. I bought a Avistar and am now kinda bored with it as there was basically no challenge to it. So for my second plane I dont wanna do the same thing, buy a plane and a couple weeks later, I dont wanna be bored with it. Any suggestions? Not sure if I should get a mid wing or go straight to the low wing. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris

Fastsky 08-18-2005 10:41 PM

RE: A good 2nd plane...

Hey Chris, An Avistar can be pretty aerobatic and fly pretty fast depending on which motor you have on it. The plane is pretty tame if you have a low power engine on the front or under powered with e conversion. If you were running the plane on e power and the performance is low (the plane flys slow and easy) I would say try running it on a hot glow engine such as an OS 46AX. The performance difference will be worth it! If this bores you, then you need to step to a higher performance plane. A Goldberg Tiger 2 would be a good choice or a plane called a Super Sportster!
