New Build, need help
Brand new to this site and getting ready to work on my 2nd plane. I am about to start a ARF build of a .70 size super chipmunk. There are a few different ARFs out there and I would really like to get a plane with flaps. I guess my question is Should I buy a plane with flaps or not? and what difference do they make in this size of a plane????? Thanks for the advice in advance.

RE: New Build, need help
This is your second plane? I would highly recommend that a Chipmunk NOT be your second plane. And I wouldn't want something with flaps either. It would just complicate the the learning curve with unneccessary additional controls. If you aren't into kit building, there are ARF's available like the Sig 4 star that will be a much easier and forgiving second plane. I'm sure others can recommend some other ARF's as well. BUT if you are intent on going with the Chipmunk, be sure to set the low rates as recommended and use an instructor with a buddy box until you get comfortable with it. After that crank up the high rates and have fun.

RE: New Build, need help
Ok, I have thought about it a little and have decided to shelve the chipmunk until next year and my 3rd build. I need some ideas on planes that would be a good 2nd plane and that would lead up to a Chipmunk.

RE: New Build, need help
The GP Rapture about $70, Sig 4 Star 40 about $79, and the Goldberg Tiger 2 about $100. All prices refer to Tower Hobbies.
There are plenty of other choices also, but these 3 are good fliers and are easy to build. Keep n mind these are kits not ARFs. The 4 Star 40 is available in ARF about $150, Tiger 60 ARF about $200 and the GP Easy Sport ARF about $130 are good choices also. DaveB |
RE: New Build, need help
The Tiger 2 in either size would be a good transition to low wing and more agile plane. They could also be modified to tail dragger.

RE: New Build, need help
i think the ultra stick would be a good second plane it has a setup for flaps,it is an arf and is lightweight.when you want it to be a bear it will be ready, also landing is smooth as silk very slow.it isn't a low wing but does have flaps.
