Prop nut start?
 

Hi,

Sorry if this is a silly question. If you use a prop nut instead of a spinner how do you start your engine with an electric starter since the cup that goes over the spinner is too big for the prop nut.

You use a rounded prop nut like Dubro, Great Planes, and Higley make. Turn the starter insert around and you'll find a smaller hole that will fit the cone nut nicely.

One method is to turn the starter insert around so that the insert rides on the prop washer and the nut protrudes into the hole in the insert. This method at best works marginally as its difficult to maintain starter alignment during the start, frequently resulting in thrown inserts.

A better and safer method is to use spinner nuts like these: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...=++&search3=Go They fit your cones perfectly and the are not subject to all the problems of cheap plastic spinners.

This is designed for bare props but maybe the inner hole could be enlarged for your nut.

flyinfriend.... I don't know if my insert is well worn... But I use the small hole
of the insert on both my rounded prop nuts and my -3" size T.T. spinners and
it has been working great.., this is on both the 2 & 4c's... OS..YS's...Saito & a
Mag... I do "carefully" use a bit more pressure and insure it is centered well
on the Higley rounded prop nut before starting, If not, they will dance on you..
I also use the same on the double nuts of the stock setup, as long as the nuts/
shaft will not bottom out in the insert/nut.... But all my engines starts up good
and fast... So I may be just lucky.....
