Shoot down ?'s
Okay. I had the fear of the Lord put into me my first night at the club regarding turning on the transmitter without the frequency pin. Rightfully so, I might add. Anyway I do have a question.
Now, I realize that accidents do happen, and I have been taught to 'fess up when you step in it. What I would like to know is what is the prudent course of action if a member accidentally shoots down, steps on, or otherwise damages/destroys another member's plane? Does AMA insurance cover this? Do I offer to pay for it? Don't get me wrong, if I destroy someone's SPAD then okay, I'll shell out the $20-$30 bucks for it. But what about a $3400 plane? |

AMA won't cover that.
That $3400 plane of yours.... if I turn on my transmitter and shoot it down.... would you mind? You wouldn't want me to pay for it, would you? I'm guessing you would. Dave Olson |

This discussion has been had here on the RCU forums before, and the very question you ask usually ends up in some very heated debate. My own opinion on the matter is that if you shoot down someone elses Plane, then you fess up to your mistake, and you do everything within your means to help to make it right to the person who's plane you shot down. I am not saying you should put yourself into bankruptcy, or starve your kids, but in some way, or some how, you do whatever you can possibly do WITHIN YOUR MEANS to show this other flyer that you take responsibillity, and are making your best effort to make things right. If you are flying a very high dollar Plane, you had also better realize that the majority of the people you are flying with does not have the same size bank roll as you, and probally nothing short of there Life Insurance policy will pay for your broken Plane. And even though I believe the way I do, there is no model Plane in the world worth enough to ruin somebody elses life over.
If I am at the field with someone that has the same frequency, and even though we are only allowed one frequency pin # to share. I quarenteen my radio to the cab of my Truck when that other guy fly's. That way if he happens to crash, he will not suspect the radio that is laying next to me. When we exchange the pin, we show each other that the other persons radio is off, and that radio is not going to touched while the other guy has the pin #. |

This happened to me last year. I turned on, and I knew it immediately. I stepped up and told the guy to name what he wanted. I could repair, build him a new plane, or pay outright for it. I said he'd take cash. Cost me $300. I didn't even think of arguing. I screwed up, so I had to make it right

Thats pretty much the way it goes at our club also Chuck. We have the air full of $50-$500 Planes, and when a real expensive one goes up, he is flying by himself. Im not going to take the chance of putting one of my little birds through the chest of one of those fire breathing flying dragons! LOL

I also belong to a Club that only has around 40 members, so I can imagine at some of the real big Clubs that it may be a little harder to always know what is going on around you. At a small Club like ours, it seems that everyone communicates pretty good, and everyone is usually very aware of what is going on around them.

We had an accident (not a frequency conflict) at our club last month. A member was taxiing a plane an accidentally turned off his radio. The plane sped up and t-boned another members Kadet Sr. He immediately offered to pay for the plane or repair it. Two weeks later the plane was returned, repaired and completely recovered, even the sections that needed no repair. There were no hard feelings or even anger over the incident (benefit of a small and very friendly club). We do have some very expensive scratch built planes flown at our club. If these are in the air I do not even think about turning my radio on. Like piper_chuck, I am not putting my planes up in the air, or even work on them. I am too busy admiring the other pilot and his plane.

I wonder if he would accept a lay-a-way plan. It does worry me. I know how proud I am of my plane, a Kadet. I would be SICK if I caused someone's prize possesion to go into "lawn dart" mode. I think the radio in the truck, or quarantine area is a great idea. I also think that if I show up and I'm sharing the frequency pin with a very expensive plane, I might remove the battery, just to be sure. I don't want this thread to get to big. I just had a simple question, mainly about the AMA insurance covering an incident. My question has been thoroughly answered. Thanks again guys! Septic Shock (septicemia) |
