First Airplane
 

Hi guys, I was wondering if this would be an alright airplane for me to learn how to fly with an instructor??

That plane is for 3d flying and will be very responsive. If you have never flown before it is going to be a nightmare to control this guy. What you need is a high wing trainer and then for your second or third plane you can fly the katana.

Really, I know they're not as cool looking, but get a high-wing trainer. If you've tried flying (and could do it reasonably well), you can even go with a semi-symmetrical high-wing trainer (a little more aerobatic than a basic flat-bottom high-wing trainer). They're called trainer planes for a reason; they're the best ones to learn on.

Joshua, The above replies are correct. I have a Katana 40 and it's an awesome plane but I can't imagine myself flying back when I was learning to fly. No one on here can really determine your flying skills from here but as a general rule it would be too much airplane for you. Is there someone at the field that has one that would let you fly it (up high) on the box and see how you do?

Josh, You sound like me! Only you had the good sense to come here first & ask, I didn't. Get yourself a Trainer and an Instructor and go from there, otherwise you'll probably be doing a u-turn very shortly. I did. Good Luck.

Nothing wrong with building it, but it is a loooooong way from a trainer too.

With the right instructor you can learn to fly almost anything, however with the Katana it will take you a long, long time. Your instructor will fly it much more than you and the plane will be old and worn by the time you can fly it alone--if you haven't given up before then. The whole process will be very frustrating for you, and that's if you can find an instructor who's willing to train you on it--most likely it'll be someone who just wants to fly your plane. If you really need to have something that looks cool, think about the H9 P-51 PTS (although "cool" is relative here).
