converting knots to mph

Quick question: what is the conversion from mph to knots?

DMcQuinn 10-29-2005 11:26 AM

RE: converting knots to mph

type this into google:

convert 100 mph to knots

you will get:

100 mph = 86.8976242 knots

RE: converting knots to mph

or 100 Knots equals 115 mph. Multiply the speed in knots by 1.15 to get MPH

AND PLEASE

KNOTS is the unit of measurment of nautical miles per hour

DO NO say or write it as

KNOTS per hour.

WHY KNOT?:D

Statute mile= 5,280 ft
Nautical mile= 6,072 ft, or one second of latitude.

Oops, you're right; I better reset my mental clock:)

A knot is a rate of speed, not a unit of distance.

So were we up to about ummmm 35Kts today? Windspeed that is? I know three planes that can take it!

Relative to a stationary observer of course :)

Light travels through a vacuum at the rate of one centimeter per jiffy.

Ever wonder where the light goes when it disappears into a black hole? Well drive by my house when only my wife and kids are there--every damn light in the place is on, the place is glowing like a star--- that must be where all the light goes:)

I don't know if this is correct, however I'm sure if we can get knot's coverted to light speed in a vacume, I'm sure yall can tell me about this.

Knot's on a rope were tied in to determine speed back in the day when everything was wind powered? The amount of knot's flying determined the speed in knot's.

Old wives tail or ture?

RE: converting knots to mph

From wikipedia

Origin
In some sailing ships, speed was measured by casting the log from the stern. The log was relatively immobile, and attached by line to a reel. Some sources suggest that knots placed at a distance of 47 feet 3 inches (14.4018 m) passed through a sailor's fingers, while another used a 28 second sandglass to time the operation. The knot count would be reported and used in the sailing master's dead reckoning and navigation. This method gives a value for the knot of 20.25 in/s, or 1851.66 m/h. The difference from the accepted value today is a bit less than 0.02%.

The knots didn't fly on a rope. The rope was let out and the knots were counted.
