O.S. .46 FX engine on ebay
 

Just bought a os .46 FX on ebay for $65.00?? I think its 10 years old!!! At least thats when os changed to AX. I hope it runs like the guy says. If not I guess I'll send it back. Any one have this engine?? I wish I had checked it out. I thought it was a typo and was really a AX[:o]

tvhelidad, did you mean .46FX? The AX replaced the FX about a year or so ago. You are taking a pretty big chance buying a well used engine sight unseen. All you can do is hope for the best. Fire it up when you get it and post the rpm's here. Maybe you'll get lucky. I have two of them and I consider them very good engines.

your right its a .46FX I dont have anything to measure rpm. I do belong to a club so maybe one of the guys has a rpm meter

$65 is a good price for a .46FX in good condition. Put a 11x6 prop on it and get someone at the club to help you tach it. If the innards are good, it will be a nice engine for you. Replacement parts are expensive and it would be easy to exceed the cost of a new engine if you add their cost to the $65. Good luck on it tvhelidad.

tvhelidad, one thing you can do is to put a prop on the motor {something to hold onto} and check for wear in the bearings by holding the motor with one hand and apply pressure via the prop to see if you have up and down ,or side to side play in the bearings, secondly put a few drops of fuel down the carby and check for good compression. If bearings are sloppy, then they have to be replaced, front and rear bearings , if no compression is felt , then the motor will need a complete overhaul, so you be the judge. Just remember that badly worn bearings will explode and cause serious damage .

after what I went through with the OS .25 FX I bought off of ebay , I would have not bought this engine . It seems to me , even after changing parts on an engine , as I have done on 2 OS engines, they never run as if the where new. I hope you have better luck with your .46 FX . I bought mine new almost a year ago and I still feel that POP ! when turning it past TDC. What a power house this engine is and it is not heavy at all.

I am not an advocate of tearing engines apart without cause, but I suggest removing the carb, backplate, and head BEFORE you try to run it. Check for dirt or signs of rust. Turn the engine over and if it's not absolutely smooth, it needs new bearings. Look at the liner to see if there are any signs of peeling. If there are, you may need a new piston/sleeve. Once you know the condition of the engine, look at the expense of fixing any problems and decide if it's worth keeping the engine or returning it (if you can).

I agree that it's risky buying second hand engines from eBay. I've had a couple problems (one that was supposed to be new and wasn't, another that was supposed to be almost new and had rusty bearings) and have decided that I will only buy engines that are guaranteed to be new.

Regarding both buying and selling on Ebay, I have had mixed results. On one sale, I got burned because the character I sold the item to waited 6 weeks to pay me then gave me a bad rating because I had the nerve to ask for my money.

When buying, I bought model aircraft stuff, but in a limited basis. I prefer to use the RCU forums and the service RCU provides for buying anything related to model aircraft. I bought a Zen 90 from a person down in Virginia (I live in NJ) through RCU and am very satisfied with what I bought. The person I bought was a true gentleman and was totally honest and friendly throughout the process, unlike some of my experiences on Ebay.

If it were me, I would NOT buy an engine through Ebay. I am sure you can find someone on RCU that has one (OS 46) for sale. I have three of the engines and love them. I upgraded to the OS 50 on my Venus 40 and will definitely wear that engine out before I let go of it!!

Just my opinion, and a little advice. If you already bought the engine, good luck. If not, please consider what I said above. For Model Aircraft stuff.. stick with RCU. If you want furniture, maybe Ebay is the place.

those fx engines are pretty tolorant. OS has fixed the peeling problem. i keep hearing guys telling other people that "it might be a peeling liner" but i have never heard of a recent case of this. those FX engines really carry the OS reputation for lasting forever, so as long as the engine has not been abused, it should be a great little engine.
in regards ot the price, becuase of the genuine lack of trust due to the fact that nobody has ever heard of anyone else on ebay, and there are a lot more jerks and braindead buyers/sellers on ebay than there are on rcu brings the ebay price for the same item a bit lower than on rcu. engines on ebay, in my experiance, only sell for about half their original price when used, so $64 is actually about right for a $130 motor.
