engine question
 

I have a nexstar with a o.s. .46 engine. The engine runs great , however when i usually am going to land and i idle down my engine almost always shuts off. Now i have had several people at the field come and tune my engine, samething happens. Any ideas.

Could be a few things:

- Pin Hole in your fuel line
- Fule tank location (to low maybe)
- Low Needle valve setting (get an experinced pilot to set this)


One thing i can recommend for a quick fix, is to get a one way valve to put on the fuel line between the exhast muffler nipple and the the fuel tank. This should keep pressure in the tank when u idle down.

Sounds to me like the guys at the field dont know what they are doing. You need to tinker with the mixture. there is a little screw that you need to adjust. Its going to take some time to get it right as its usually set at the factory, and if they messed with it then its messed up. Try this let it run and then idle it down if it quits then turn the screw just a little maybe a 1/4 turn. The run it again. Sounds to me like its running lean, to much air and not enough fuel. Its just going to take some time to get it right.

Whenever i am on teh ground and i put it up to full throtle and then go back to idle its fine, I will try adjusting that little screw. Thanks.

Just another thought, How long are you letting your engine run at idle? Most 2 strokes will load up and die eventually if they idle for long enough, If your motor can idle for 30-40 seconds and still have a smooth transition to full throttle then it is set properly or atleast good enough.

Don't use the one way valve. You shouldn't need it. As suggested, adjust the idle mix a little at a time. Also, check the idle speed. Anything below 2500 is good. You might be trying to idle the engine too slowly.

Another good idea is to get out the instructions! I have an O.S. .46LA and an O.S. .46AX. Both these engine's instruction sheet outline setting the low speed needle (Idle mixture) extremely well. As they say, if all else fails, read the instructions!
