Mobile phones do affect transmitters. They affect the memory settings on modern synthesised transmitters.

One of my club members had his phone in his pocket whilst flying, the phone rang and his model immediately went out of control and crashed . Subsequent investigation of the remains found that some of the memory settings ( in the transmitter ) were different to those used while the model flew properly.
Further investigation by another member proved that mobile phones could produce changes to transmitter settings.
Consequently in our club mobile phones must be switched off near the flight line. This is also a recommendation of the British Model Flying Association.

I'll take it one step further. FAA rules REQUIRE cell phones to be turned off BEFORE a commercial jet reaches the runway for take off and left off till after the plane has cleared the runway after landing. This is due to known RF interference with aircraft navigation systems. I've seen a VOR receiver go nuts because a cell phone was being used just outside the electronics bay during a maintenance cycle. Considering that the VOR system is one of the primary navigation systems used on commercial AND PRIVATE aircraft, I have no doubt that cell phones can and will affect a modern computer radio's ability to control an R/C aircraft. Having a cell phone on the flightline, in my opinion, should be banned by all flying clubs to prevent an accident from getting someone hurt, or worse.

my dad keeps his clipped on to his transmitter so he can keep track of how long he has been flying and it has made him crash not because of interference because during a landing when it rang he looked down and that was it. now he wants me to fix the plane

BasinBum: I'll bet you didn't notice, but I am convinced that it was the UFO hovering directly above the two airplanes that caused the mid air. Just my opinion------

I belonged to a club in which we put the ban of cellphones in the bylaws then some members got upset and removed the ban the following year.

our club in florida mandates you have a cell phone if your flying alone. but hey i love you all.

a little courtesey used and this won't be an issue.people go to the field to fly,not bothered with ringing cell phones.those that bring cell phones turn them off or leave them in your car.you can check messages or missed calls when not flying may save your own plane .life was so much simpler before cell phones.

Some guys(like me) must have a cell phone on them while their place of employment is open. This includes flying days.I consider myself a safe pilot and I have taken calls while flying. I just go up and do slow lazy circles. If it's going to be a long call I just hang up land and call back. No big deal. IMHO if your equipment is up to snuff you won't have a problem. I would worry more about someone flying one channel up or down from yours than their cell phone.

David, this sounds dangerious to me but I am an over cautious person.
I will tell you that I have had a cell phone scramble my 9C.
With that said, I take the precaution.

Try placing your phone right up to your monitor and calling it..

Yes it does! On some channels more than others. I had a HAM band that it effected and it seems to affect channel 48 on my current radio. Sometimes I forget to take off my phone in my shop and my control surfaces get the shakes. I've gone as far as asking others to leave their phones out of the flight box. It's happened too many times near my phone to be chance.

lol Kind of sounds like me and my Twist. When I feel my phone ringing I just fly high and start flying big circles. Not had any problems with my phone yet. The only thing that worries me is interference on the 6-meter band from other hams cause the band is open.
