What engine for my new addition?
 

Hello everyone. I have just purchased a World Models' Cap 232-46. What's a good engine to fit the bill for this plane. I was originally thinking b/w an Evo 46 or OS 46AX but now I am not so sure anymore. Since the Cap has a full cowl on it, the LHS told me that a Super Tigre wouldn't be a good choice but I really don't know why. What do you guys recommend?

Are you looking at only 2-stroke engines or are 4-cycle also an option?

Probably because the Super Tiger comes with a huge butt ugly muffler.
You would need to purchase an aftermarket muffler to fit it into
any kind of a cowl.

Why not consider a Thunder Tiger 46 Pro? Its one of the most
reliable best running 46s out there. I have 3 of them and all
three run terrific. And for a lot less money than the OS.

I've got the OS-AX46, the Evo 46 and the TT 46 pro.

I think the TT 46 is the best value, the OS the best engine and the Evo is right up there as well. You would be happy with any of those.

If you are looking into a 45 cycle, then the Saito -72 would be a good choice.

Yeah, I am really only looking at two strokes at this point just due to financial constraints.

On the TT46, does it have a remote needle adjustment and is that something I should really be concerned with anyway? I didn't know if it being enclosed in a cowl wouldn't be that much easier to adjust with a remote needle.

Which do you guys think will make more useable power, the TT46 or the OS? If I decide to go with a pitts style muffler, I may go ahead and consider a Super Tigre GS51 as I have one now and have no complaints about it other than the quoted above "huge butt ugly muffler"!

The TT has a swept-back front needle -- it keeps your pinkies away from the prop very effectively, but you would have to drill a hole in the cowl -- no big deal -- you'd have to do it for the OS rear needle as well.

As for power, there is very little, if any difference between the OS & the TT with a pitts muffler. With the stock mufflers, the OS has a power edge because the stock TT muffler is an interesting blend of high backpressure & high noise. If you put the OS AX muffler on the TT, there is essentially no difference in power. Interestingly, the same thing happens if you put the AX muffler on an old OS 46 FX.

You can fix the TT backpressure problem by removing the baffle & drilling the outlet stinger to the next larger drill size -- that really wakes the TT up without much increase in the noise level.

You can also fit a Tower muffler to either of them -- the output would be virtually identical in that case & they would both make entertaining growling & howling noises.
