MDS.40 Tuning Question
 

I have a hangar 9 easy 2 with an mds .40 in it. since my carb was jammed i tooks it out and my friend left it spotless but the tunining needle is all whack. What should i open it up to?(its only been run once)

I also have an mds .40. The way I tune mine is to give it full throttle then squeeze the gas line for a second until the plane revs up. Then I lean it out a little bit and squeeze the gas line again to see if it revs up. If it does then I lean the needle a little bit more. I do this until when I squeeze the gas line for a second it dies. Then I turn it like 2 clicks to the rich side. Works every time.

For starters, open up the needle valve 2 or 2.5 turns open from fully closed. It should start and run at this setting.

I have found the best way to tune an MDS engine (Metal Door Stop, Many Dead STicks, etc ) is with a 12 - 16 lb sledge hammer. Then put an OS, Thunder Tiger or Evolution engine on the plane. :D

maybe he won't do an exchange for another engine but you off course can buy another one and put it in there.

Don't be afraid of the MDS yet....from my own experience and from what i have read from others you can run the MDS without any problems as long as you have the right combination of fuel and glow plug. For the fuel i would recommend 0% or 5% and you should get something like the Fox idle plug. That should keep the engine from quitting on you.

Like DMcquinn said, open the HS needle to 2.5 turns out and i would probably do the same with the LS and then slowly lean them out after several tanks.

what fuel, glow plug and prop are you using?

im going to use 10 percent, thats what the man at the hobby shop said to use.

Go to the MDS website, I'll bet you can download the manual for this engine that would include break in & tuning procedures as well as their fuel recommendations, just a thought.

MDS engines are higher compression engines and do better with "0" to 5% nitro. Sounds like the man in the hobby shop is selling fuel. 10% costs more than 5%.

Have you ever noticed how anytime an MDS engine post comes up. Somebody is going to say what MDS stands for. I called my 1.48 "mighty damn $##ty" for 3 gallons, then re did the fuel system, took it all back. My 40 gave me fits for at least 1 gallon. 10% coolpower green.

I second what tukkus said. I have a MDS .40 on my Extra Easy and with 5% nitro and an idle bar plug it runs great. I have the original manual somewhere in my storage shed and if you can't find it online, I'll dig it up and copy it for you. Do you have the newer C2 carb on it or the earlier version? Here's a pic of the original carb which is on mine.

Send it to Horizon Hobby and they will fit a new carb on it for free, if its the old version,
I have two MDS. motors Low nitro and idle plug, and get the new carb.
Call Horizon they were great to me, I only paid shipping to them everything else free.

Call Horizon like cdale03 said and see what they'll do for you. Mine runs fine with the original so I've not messed with it. And, you can put any .40 size 2 stroke motor in the plane that you want. Hanger 9 is putting the Evolution engines in the Extra Easy now and I've heard they're extremely easy to start and reliable.

$5 or 6$ was all to get it there. I bought a trainer off ebay. the MDS .40 was on it and had only been run once or twice, I got it to run but still cut off every once in a while , So I called horizon and talked with them,(someone had stated a recall on the carbs) I didn't even have a receipt for the motor or anything, just sent it them, and their service guy replaced carb and set it up for me, even hand wrote me a note saying what he had done and that it was now running fine for him.. Great Service from them.:D
I also picked up another one a MDS.40fp that the barrell on the carb will not close,
unless you completly remove the idle stop screw, so I'm gonna send it back also.
Its been a year or so since I sent the first one, I hope they with take care of this one also.

I guess a call to them can't hurt and see what they say. I also bought mine second hand and don't have a reciept. I've heard about a lot of guys having problems with the old carb and for 5 or 6 bucks it seems worth getting the newer carb on the off season. Have a happy holiday all! Prop.
