So I was studying and decided to fly a little on my RFG2 sim. I've had it for a couple of weeks now and I've been able to land quite frequently. I was wondering if a "good" landing is just being able to land or is it also the line-up with the "runway". I've never actually flown before. I can line it up every so often but i can do a very pretty landing every time (i guess it would be a 3 point landing cause it's a trainer).

Also, I feel bad for babbling on the message board. I don't want to anger any of you. Is there some kind of protocol or unspoken rule I (or any "newbie") should follow? You all have been a great help and I appreciate everything you've done for me.

It sounds like you are doing real well with the sim. Keep it up. Practice making landing pattern oval or rectangular flights. Keep low to the ground so you can see the surrounding landscape. Get familiar with landmarks in the terrain. Take off and make easy 90 or 180 degree turns, once you are 180 degrees to the runway, reduce the throttle and slow the plane down, maintain altitude and keep the wings level, start making your easy turn 180 degrees back twards the runway. Once the plane is flying directly at you reduce the throttle slowly one click at a time. Practice keeping the wings level, "stick to the down wing" hold the elevator as needed to control the glideslope. You should be off the throttle by this time, flare gently and touch the rear wheels first. If you loose to much airspeed too early you will stall and fall to the ground. Cut the throttle when you see the edge of the runway. If you can fly with the plane coming directly at you and keep the wings level, decsend smoothly, dont jerk the elevator, you will be able to land everytime. Practice, Practice, Practice

I have had G2 for a few weeks now, and I soloed today, and flew 4 sucessful flights, G2 definetly help me out on final approach, and getting used to the controls when flying towards me, but its a little diffrent landing the real thing other than landing on the sim. Something that helped me was on the sim I would fly the plane strait towards me and land like that, because pretty much that is how it will be when you finally get to land the real thing.

Heres something for you to try. Set the landings on the sim all the way up to realistic, and add some wind too, 5mph, with 10mph gusts. That will be a little more realistic.

I've been flying for 23 years. I think that lining up with the runway on those sims is tuff! Keep practicing! I believe that the sims are a wonderful tool. I simply believe that its easier to land a real model. I also think that the wind in the program is funky. I've flown in 20 to 25 knot wind. Here in TX, that isn't strange. If I punch that in to that sim, I can not get that plane down!
And I don't mean that you should expect to go out and fly in 25 knots. Later maybe.

Electrons are cheap and you're going to anger someone with almost any post because the board is full of zealots who live to be offended. Don't let that worry you.

I soloed about five months ago. I was very concerned because I was having a very hard time landing in G2 (finding the down arrow key was a help).

I found that landing in real life was easier than in G2 because of spatial awareness, that's not to say that landing was easy.

Once I got the hang of landing in real life, landing in the sim became easier and I found I was able to use the sim to improve my landings in real life in terms of actually controlling where on the runway the plane came down.

All that being said, don't think G2 is going to let you skip the buddy box phase you NEED with a .40 size trainer. It probably will drastically reduce the time you're on the buddy box, but it won't elminate it.

In my case, I soloed after six flights on the buddy box. An older gentleman, who didn't use a sim, spent the whole summer on the buddy box. (Of course, the sim wasn't the only reason for that).

Finally, real world flying is A LOT more fun that flying in the sim.

I've been flying for over 40 years and I still have trouble landing with my sim. To me, the sim is actually harder because of the limited view.
