RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
ORIGINAL: BasinBum Ross, nice job on the wheel pants however, the Geek here has been building his entire model with alphatic resin glue and no CA. That's what makes this build thread interesting and differant from the 18 other SE build threads. |
RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
Ours will be done mainly with wood glue as well. The whole idea is to give the kid building experience, as he is interested in crafting something which took some effort, that he can point to and say, "I did that".
If I was concerned about how long it was going to take, I'd have gotten him an ARF...;) |

Still pondering my color scheme / grapics. Using Heat and Windex to apply monokote graphics This thread is inspiring - great write up.

RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
I recived my second SSE kit today, I ordered some Oracover with it and have planned a very simple scheme...
Whole plane Corsair blue with a white tail... I like it simple and this might look good, we'll see. |

Somegeek, very nice build, everything looks great! My SSE was my first kit that I built by myself, (with a little help from my bro ):D It flies awsome, my mods were, a hatch to get into the fuel tank compartment, and adding 1 inch to the rudder, I think it helped out a lot. From hovering to knife edges this thing is great, but it wont go into a "flat" inverted or upright flat spin.... But the aleron rolls are pretty much blinding when dual rates are on.... so thats allways fun. Also, it will hover at 3/4-to full throtle, I blip the engine a little to make sure it stays in a hover.... I can even torque roll it a little with the irvine .53 with a 12.25x3.75 prop, but the rudder could still be a little more powerful. Overall, it will get your blood rushing and your mind thinking, I hope you enjoy the SSE as much as I do, you put your time in building it, once your done, and you madien it? are you? You will be amazed that your home built kit actually flies and flies awsome... depeding on CG, trims, etc... :D Now I got an extreme flight edge 540T profile, I can't wait to do things that I've never done before in it.
I attached some pics... oh, sorry that the far away pics are poor quality, the dc has only 3x optical zoom... Thanks, Matt 1st pic: me and sig, 2d: hover, 3rd: knife edge, 4th: 3 pizoint landing! yes I said pizzzoint! lol, 5th: EF Edge 540T... I have it finished but I haven't took any pics of it yet completed |
RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
Glued up F1 and F2 tonight. Used epoxy on both which mighta been overkill, but figured it couldn't hurt. A q-tip helped reduce any excess and leave a nice clean filet.
http://somegeek2.home.comcast.net/si...a_build_31.jpg Not a lot of clearance for the use of a square here so I used a smaller piece(sitting on cowl cheek) that was square to verify my pieces were perpendicular to the fuse side. Not using the stock throttle cable hole so I need to measure and drill that before installing the other side of the fuselage. Drilled, tapped and CA'd the servo screw holes. Only 1 drop of CA was put on each hole... looks like more though in the pic from the flash. http://somegeek2.home.comcast.net/si...a_build_32.jpg somegeek |
RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
Very good, I also used epoxy on the firewall, and other crucial places. If you want you can expoxy the entire engine area to make it fuel proof...

RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
Thanks, Matt.
I'd like to maiden this one. I didn't maiden my LT-40 but would like to maided this one as my first. Need to rack up many more hours on my LT-40 though. :D |
RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
somegeek,
A good way to ensure those servo screws stay tight is to add some more "meat" (wood) for the threads to grab. I keep several sticks of 1/4" x 1/4" spruce on hand for this. Once you have located the holes as per your photo in post #107, cut pieces of the spruce square stock to length and glue them in place, centered under each pair of holes. When dry, re-drill and re-treat with thin CA. This makes for a bullet-proof servo installation. Make sure you get spruce, NOT basswood. Basswood is softer and tends to split. P.S.: Wait until AFTER you have run the screws into the wood to cut the threads to add the thin CA. This allows the CA to "harden" what wood is going to be there. By cutting the threads after, you lose some effect of the thin CA. |

RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
Progress is steady...
Got another rib glued up and pinned in. Glued in and secured F4 and the servo tray. http://somegeek2.home.comcast.net/si...a_build_33.jpg Looking forward to getting the fuselage to the point where I can start working on the cowl. |
RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
Will you have to cut the nose cheeks off when you mount the cowl? Or is it too soon to know these things?

RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
Cheeks will be removed.

RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
This build would go a lot faster with more dumbells and cans of condensed milk.
|
RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
I have many dumbells... but only one can of condensed milk. :-/

RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
Got the right wing glued up and drying...
http://somegeek2.home.comcast.net/si...a_build_34.jpg Had an incident when I glued the top spar in place... I had a 15# weight on a board balanced on top... was not paying attention and bumped the board and the 15# dumbell rolled onto a few ribs cracking them in a few places. Got the ribs repaired. Prolly stronger with the CA on the cracked areas now. Luckily they were clean breaks that were easily repaired. Ready to sheet tomorrow. |
RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
Why are you using alphatic again if you are will to do repairs with CA?

RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
So why wouldn't you want those same qualities for the rest of the build instead of making it tedious with the weights and cans and waiting? The instructions suggest CA and all this time I assumed it was because of an aversion to CA because of fumes and/or allergies. Alphatic is no stronger, possibly heavier, only slightly less expensive, so where is the advantage?

RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
When I am assembling, I put glue in places where pieces will bond and then assemble and filet as needed, I'm not trying to glue everything by assembling and then adding glue to seep in. I don't see using weights and waiting as tedious. Advantage for an overall build? Titebond II is, for me, more user friendly and from what I've read, less brittle in the end vs CA. Tomato tomadda I guess... to each their own. There are threads arguing this point.
The ribs were cracked. The CA seeped into these cracks easily. I could have completely broken the ribs apart at the cracks so I could ensure good coverage with the alphatic glue but that doesn't make sense. In this scenario, the CA worked. :D |

ORIGINAL: somegeek Tomato tomadda I guess... to each their own. There are threads arguing this point. Also, using such compounds will slow down the builder and require him to take his time... with hope ( not in my case :D ) preventing building mistakes. Oh well... either way, it's personal preference... and that's just my 2 cents. |

RE: Sig Somethin' Extra Build
Steve,
There you go with the sanding again, I get the feeling you're sloppy with the glue. (insert smilie face here). If I was the type that just wanted to get it over with I wouldn't have just built a Kadet Senior kit with custom made night flying lights(19 LED's), bomb bay doors, taildrager and aileron mods and fiberglass cowl. |
