All of my supplies arrived and I went to get my Sig SE kit out of the closet..... and I find the thing wedged in the corner of our closet crushed by my golf clubs. Apparently my wife didn't realize why they would not go as far back as they used to. So, here I am anxious to start a build and I need some help.

I wanted to build a scale Corsair, but I have noticed that it is not recomended for a first build. (Am I correct in that statement?) I also like the Texan. I am just not sure who makes a good version of the kit. Any suggestions on which way to go? I will also take some other ideas into consideration. Thanks in advance. (P.S. The funeral was held in my fireplace last night, no chance of salvaging any of the wood)

Just wanted to add that I have many hours into Aerofly Pro Deluxe with great success. (This is going to be my first plane)

No matter how many hours you have on whatever simuator you have, you need to start with a TRAINER. Neither the Corsair or the Texan, or any other warbird, is an R/C trainer plane.

Perhaps I should clarify. I have used the sim to get the base skills down. I will be building a kit in order to fully understand what the plane consists of and what to expect if anything goes wrong. I will be purchasing a ARF trainer to learn on, and then use the radio I am purchasing on the warbird as well.

If you have never built a kit before I wouldn't start with a warbird. Most all of the warbird kits on the market today are what is considered a "builder's kit" (yes, there are exemptions to this). That means that the manufacturers expect that you have a base set of building skills before you start the kit. Therefore there is a lot of information they will leave out. They will simply say that something needs to be done, but they won't tell you how to do it. They expect you to know. Most of the "starter" kits out there will explain in great detail how things are done so that you have a clear understanding of what to do. If you want my opinion I would replace the Sig Something Extra kit and build that plane. IMHO that is what could be called a "building trainer", meaning that it's a great kit to learn to build on. The materials are high quality and the instructions are very clean and concise.

Hold off building a warbird until you have a few builds under your belt.

Here's my help. I would suggest that since she's the one who appears to have stuffed the golf clubs too far back and destroyed your kit, it's only natural that SHE should replace the SSE. Unfortunately, as we all know, women are never wrong, and men are never right, so while this sounds like a great idea to us guys, it ain't gonna happen. :D So, I'll echo what Ken said, get another SSE kit.

Getting her to replace the thing that will be taking up the dinning room table for a few weeks would be quite an accomplishment. I think that I will just get another SE on my own. I haven't even put the guilt trip on her for breaking it yet. She has been avoiding me a little so she must know its coming.

Perhaps for her mistake I should switch it to a 43% Cap to teach her a lesson!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps you should offer to teach her to build and fly so she can join you in your hobby? Then she will have the proper respect for the fragility of R/C models.

When it comes to things like that she has zero patience. We do enjoy the outdoors and sports together but this hobby would not work out very well as a couple.

If all you have is simulator time, and you want to build a kit, then build a trainer.

The idea that your even thinking about building a SSE for your first kit--when you've never even flown a real plane is just rediculous IMO.

Build your trainer, then you can actually go out and fly instead of talking about flying.:eek:

There will be plenty of time for building SSE and warbirds later on down the road after you actually learn to fly.

At the very least, when the kit comes in (and the ARF too) show them to your wife and explain where they will be and how to handle them in the future (or how to avoid them). Keep the guilt trip to a minimum, she should appreciate that. Heck, things happen and you didn't tell her where it was so it was partly your fault anyway. [:o]

Don't be so unimaginative -- take the direct route. Tell her that you love her so much that you are taking up RC modelling to strengthen your relationship, instead of running around with strange women.

She will appreciate that. :D

Ummm, I do. I actually took over a whole closet to store stuff waiting to be assembled/built. I like the idea that they stay in a climate controlled environment instead of my garage workshop.

I used to live in an apartment. Very little storage space. I had a hallway closet dedicated to my airplanes. I only had 2 at the time--was failry new in the hobby. But, I could store 2 built planes, and also put 1 partially framed airframe in there. Along with all my radio gear, glue, covering, irons, basically everything. I didn't have much at the time, but I had all the basic hand tools and materials for building kits.

You just have to figure out how to put storage racks inside and organize it.

Thanks gawd times have changed!! Now I have a 1200sq. foot basement for my shop.

I can't believe you burned the kit. If the kit was still in the box, I'm having a hard time imagining that someone could do that much damage to the wood. Some would get crushed and broken, sure, but in the box, and still stacked and rubber banded together? I can't imagine someone pushing that hard on something they can't see...Surely something was salvageable....Oh well, some people just have more $$ than me, I guess...

It DOES seem a waste, 2slow. I agree...just how much pressure DID she put on those golf clubs? Some broken, some crushed, most should have survived. All the hardware should have certainly survived. Almost makes you wonder if it was premeditated. <evil grin> [sm=devious.gif] Couldn't she hear the splintering balsa and collapsing cardboard?

Actually, Jason, we'll fix neither. That's your job. I'm sorry if your marriage needs fixing, maybe you should hold off on the planes for a while. Remember, though, you gave us the ammo. We just ran with it. :)
