Iron On Hinge
What is the wisdom on using iron on hinges? Should I or should I not? Your suggestions please.

Iron On ?
Too many options. Are you setting up a trainer or 40% aerobatic plane?
Iron on hinges (monokote or equivalent) are OK for small planes but not for larger ones. "CA" type hinges work well up to 60 size planes in most cases however pinned hinges are preferred for larger planes. I personally like the ease of "CA" hinges but much prefer the function of pinned hinges. As your flight skills improve the hinges lasting longer is a definite plus. EXCAP232 |

Use CA hinges then seal the hinge gap with monocote/ultracote or even tape (such as clear packing tape). You won't have any problems.

Iron On Hinge
the iron on hinges work fine,I'm talking about the ones that are sewed in the middle then make a v to iron on to the leading and trailing edge, the brand I use is by Granite State R/C products, they are called iron on gapless hinge,45" long for 2.99,I've used them up to 15 pound planes with out any problems,I like them.

Iron On Hinge
I use iron hinges on almost all of my planes, especially the big quarter scale size. I find them much more durable than any commercial hinge. I've made them from Monocote, Solartex, and most other iron on films. They are much more reliable than most if not all other types. I have two big planes (one a 17.5 pound Pheaton 90 with a Quadra 72 cc engine that is at least 12 years old with hundreds of flights on it) with iron on hinges with no failures. I've also crashed a few planes with this type of hinge and there was never a hinge failure where most everything else was destroyed. Use them with confidence and no slop, no gap, no friction will be your reward.
