What's Glassing?
Can anyone tell me what glassing is?
Why do people do it? What is it used for? Thanks a lot! |
RE: What's Glassing?
Glassing is fiberglassing. It is used for superb strenght. basicly you put a light coat of fiberglass resin and then put fiberglass mat on the area and another coat of fiberglass resin. make it smooth, let dry and sand to a finish. There are a lot of post on here about it.

RE: What's Glassing?
One of the reasons glassing is sometimes called for is to strengthen the wing. A fiberglass cloth anywhere from 1" to 6" is applied across the wing joint for strength. Also, another reason fiberglass is sometimes applied to the entire airframe for both strength and finish.

RE: What's Glassing?
You can get the fiberglass cloth in different thicknesses from 3/4 oz per yard up to 6 oz per yard.
Instead of Epoxy resin (My Favorite) some applications may call for ABS glue, CA glue, or Polyester resin. Enjoy, Jim |

Don't forget the waterbase polyurethane.

RE: What's Glassing?
Sorry about that. I feel like an absolute failure for not mentioning about the polyurethane. When covering a large portion of a plane, this is probably the most common liquid.
Enjoy, Jim |
