personalizing ARF's

Hi All

I have a couple of Q's. Your input is needed please. I am open to all opinions

here they are:

1. what ways are there to make an ARF look unique?

(the reason I ask this is that my wife and I are expecting a baby at the end of the month so I know that I will not have the time to build another plane right now. Although I would rather build kits. the plane that is on deck will probably be a 4* 60)

2. The Lt-40 I just built I covered in Ultra cote I am used to using this. If I were to Buy an ARF 4* 60 can I put ultra cote trim pieces on the factory covering with out damaging either one?

(I would buy a Yellow 4* and put purple on it so it would match my lt-40. I like the feet look I guess?)

Are you referring to changing the structure (bashing), or just changing the appearance of the covering patterns?

Probably no BASHING. just more of a personal looking plane. I don't like my things to look like everyone elses planes

Yes, you can do add color striping to the covering without hurting it. I did to mine (red) to help with orientation issues.

Congrats on the baby. Best wishes,

;)

farminred,
If you want to change to look of a stock ARF there are a couple of things that you can do. I assume that we're not talking about striping off the covering and recover it differently. You can use monokote/ultracote to chanage the exisiting covering job. You can add some stripes here and there, or other shapes and covering can change the look of the plane. Something as simple as a checkerboard on the bottom of the wing will go a long way to change the looks of the plane.

The other thing you can do is to have a vinyl cutter (PM me on for more info here) cut you some graphics/logos that you can apply to the plane to "dress" it up.

If you want the most impact, doing #1 will stand out more.

Tale a look at the 2 pictures here and you can see the difference a couple of pieces of monokote can make

Hope this helps

If the truth be known, I post all the time EXCEPT for friday. I try to avoid posting on fridays because I don't want to give Bill, Bruce, and the rest of you all any ammunition for picking on me!!! [X(] :D:D

I put together a LT 40 arf for my son's 12th birthday and had this decal made for the wing, I am also having the club logo made for the other side

farminred,

Another option is Lustre Coat paint. I just tried this over Monokote for the first time and I was very happy with the results. My local Hobby Shop owner gave me a tip that worked beautifully. (Thanks Pat at Some Dudes Hobby Shop) Put the can of paint in hot hot water for at least 8 to 10 minutes before using. Make sure that the water is VERY hot, well as hot as your tap will let you get it. I put a big plate on top of the can to weigh it down and keep it under water for the 10 minutes. It makes the paint spray on great!
It came out very smooth. I would also shoot a clear over that when you are done.

Here's a pic for you of my Yellow Four Star 60 ARF. Added the trim pieces, changed the decals around a bit. Bottom side of the wing has wide red stripes and it can definitely be seen!

I have five rolls of monokote(or not) and some trim tape. I've yet to find a vinyl cutter around my place but I think I'm okay. There are some planes I think look great out of the box but some planes are just begging for some bling.
