Field Box Paint?

Like to paint my newly constructed (PLY) field box... Any recommendations on type of paint to use?

Do not use a water base paint.
Either epoxy or latex is better.

I would use a good auto paint or Rustolium. (sp)

Ageed. Ether use a car body paint or use varnish made for out door use. The type boat buiders use is good or normal Gloss paint, the type you paint your house doors with again is good

Ah, Geistware...latex IS a water-based paint. :)

The suppestion for epoxy is good. I've used poly-U with good results, too.

If you want to keep the "natural wood" look, use an OIL BASE polyurethane. My field bax is 3 years old and nothing has gotten through the polyurethane yet.

My field box is 30 years old and the polyethylene spar varnish is just fine. However, if I were to do it over again, I would use Candy Apple Red laquar. Maybe 25-30 coats, hand rubbed to a deep and lusterous shine and several coats of clear over the top! Then I would use rich Corrinthean leather for the airplane saddle and handle. I would also include a small 12 volt refridgerator to carry only soft drinks and Perrier water in. Yes, this is what I would do.

Hmm. A wise guy! :D But polyethylene?

Bruce, your absolutely correct! I guess I used Polyurethane spar varnish. Polyethylene is used to make the rings which hold my 6 carbonated hops & barley beverages together, which I must not ever drink at the flying field as the AMA forbids this.

How about using KRYLON spray paint?

RE: Field Box Paint?

The only paint that probably shouldn't be used is water colors. I think the rest will likely work! Krylon may be one of the better choices. However, think about the laquar! 25-30 coats will likely garner you the best finished flight box at the field! Think about what's important and I'm sure you'll make the best choice!

Metal flake or just metalic?

I like metal, I wouldn't say I'm a "Flake" about it though. Bruce, I was just thinking Metalica is a good band! However (and I might be showing my age) I still like Led Zepplin best!

My field box was yellow when I bought it second hand, I repainted it with some leftover house paint (Dark Gray) which is water based latex. The paint job has held up for 12 years now.

I painted my field box with flat latex exterior house paint I had mixed to match my J3 cub. I applied one coat of wood primer, two coats of latex and left it sit for a couple of weeks then I sprayed 2 light coat of Lustercoat crystal clear on it, that was 2 years ago and it has held up great

I just finished putting a Sig Field Boss flight box together last night. The grain in the wood looks pretty good, so I think I'm gonna go the Polyurethane varnish route on it. I'm guessing the spar varnish is the way to go?

RE: Field Box Paint?

Spar varnish is certainly adequate. It has UV protection and will last as long as you want the box!
